Ashes Made Cold – (Chapter: On a Pale Horse…)
"What the ***** are you?!" he moves to get up.
She jumps from the rail hauling him to the wall picking him up so his
feet dangle off the ground. She sweeps her hair from her face and
just stares at him almost as if contemplating his fate, but that was
decided already.
"You don’t remember do you?" she growls, "Let me see if I can
help!" she tosses him against the railing, which breaks and lands him
into the ice-cold lake water.
Bianca slowly walks to edge where he is flailing trying to get out of
the water. She reaches down and hauls him out dropping him painfully
to the floor. He gasps for air as his body steams in the warmer
air. He shivers uncontrollably as she walks around him.
"A year ago you took something that didn’t belong to you." She
stomps her foot on his hand listening to him howl in pain, "You went
into a boarding house…climbed its staircase and brutalized a young
woman and her lover." She states painfully calm as she circles his
convulsing body. She draws back her foot and kicks him in the ribs
to the hear the satisfying crack under her booted foot, "Tommy, you
stabbed, held a young woman, and made her watch as you tortured her
lover." She jumps up into the air landing on a knee as it gives
snapping under her force.
"*****!" he screams at the unbearable pain. He tries to curl into a
ball, but she grabs the leg she just mangled pulling him painfully
straight.
She sits on him straddling his stomach, "Do you remember?!" she gets
into his face closer.
"I…I…" he sputters out.
"I said….DO YOU REMEMBER NOW?!?!" she reaches out and snaps the bone
in his nose.
"YES!!!!!!!!!!" he screams out in an attempt to end his torture.
"I knew you would you lousy, useless, murdering *****!" she bounces on
his stomach making him scream again, "Now, you are going to give me
what I want."
"Wh-aaat?" he croaks out.
"Rest…. peace…Maggie….her name was Maggie the girl you violated." She
loses herself for a moment, "She was sweet…special…beautiful…alive…."
She looks down at his bloody face as she stands, "Alive until you
came along. So, time for my New Year’s gift since I missed
Christmas."
Bianca grabs him up standing him on his one good leg. He looks at
her through half swollen lids, "Who…are..y-you?" he mumbles out.
"And a rider sat on a pale horse and the rider was called…Death."
She answers eloquently. Tommy’s eyes go wide as he realizes who he
is seeing just before she swings him hard into the wall of the
boathouse face first. She hears the bones breaking in his face and
arm. She pulls on him as he starts to fall and swings him once more
into the wall hearing his neck snap as his whole body goes limp. She
stands head to the side looking down at what used to be a man named
Tommy.
"One chore done." Comes the vacant voice.
"Yes, much more to do." Bianca sighs. She bends to the body turning
it over and opening his shirt. She dips her fingers into the puddle
of blood the limp body is producing. She then paints an outline of a
bird on his broken chest. She looks at her creation and stands
looking up at the bird.
"Much to do." It voices.
"I know, but not tonight." Bianca answers sitting down on the
bench. She touches her hands to it and is flooded with a vision.
She sees Maggie toweling off in a bathing suit. She looks
absolutely beautiful. She is teasing her about the monster in the
lake. Maggie is telling her how she would protect her from them.
She hears herself laughing, but saying they had better go. It is
getting late. Maggie smiles at her as she tells Bianca monsters
don’t really exist.
The memory fades as Bianca opens her eyes feeling a single tear fall
down her cheek. She looks to the broken, battered body of the man
she just killed, "If monsters don’t exist, Maggie then what am I?"
she asks out loud.
"You are justice." The bird alights on her shoulder, "Now, let’s go."
Bianca stands walking over to the body. She draws back her foot one
last time and kicks the dead man square in the groin. She smiles
maniacally as she begins to whistle. She strolls from the boathouse
and distantly she can hear sirens. In the pines, the tune continues
some wonder who would be whistling such a melancholy tune this time
of year, but no one ventures out to see.
