Case in Point – (Chapter: Pedestrians and Memories)
She made her way through the halls of the building, giving a tight smile and a slight nod to each person she passed on the way to her office. Rounding the last corner, she came to a halt, back-tracked, and peeked into the room she had just passed. Inside, sitting quietly in one of the chairs against the wall, was the woman she almost hit on her way to work. She was small and seemed shy; for a moment Spencer thought she recognized her for someone else, but after a quick look-over, decided that . Deciding to keep heading to her office before the woman looked up and saw her, she continued on her way.
She unlocked her door and placed her keys in her mouth as she opened the door and reached in to flip on the switch for the lights. She walked around behind her desk, set her keys on in the bowl on the edge of it, and dropped her brief case to the floor. Christ I need some more coffee she thought as she noticed the blinking light on her message machine. Ignoring it, she headed to the office lounge and poured herself a cup of the caffeine-loaded liquid. By the time she reached her office, she had forgotten about the message.
Taking her seat behind the desk, she put on her black-framed glasses and got to work. She was finished with her coffee, half-way through filing her papers, and beginning to curse her employers for not providing her with a secretary when the flashing red light on her machine caught her eye again. Glancing at her clock she realized she had been there for over two and a half hours and probably should have listened to the message by now.
Pressing the button, her boss’ voice filled the room. "Spencer, it’s Aiden,"…pause." Leave it to him to make a dramatic pause. Just ‘cos he’s my new boss, he thinks I worship him or something. "I’ve got great news. I know I assigned you that project a week ago and I’m aware that you’re completely capable of acing it on your own, but we’ve just hired a new intern and we want her to get some experience watching the best before we throw her into the department. She’ll be by your room around 10:00 this morning so that you two can meet before you start the case. Oh, and send her to my office once you two are finished. I’ll see you later Spence. Bye"
Just as she started to go back to work, her machine started blinking at her again. What now?! After slamming her hand down on the button in frustration, Aiden’s voice again echoed throughout the nearly empty office. "Oh, I forgot to tell you. You already know this girl, so at leaset she won’t be a complete stranger. Rememer, 10:00." Not failing to notice his giddy tone, Spencer became wary.
Terrific. Why do I always get stuck with the damn interns?! And he said I know her. I never get guys. Except for that one time he assigned Marcus to work with me. What a fucking loser. He followed me around for two weeks asking me out when I clearly wasn’t interested. Why is it that guys can’t ever take hints?
She glanced at her clock and nearly jumped when she saw that it read 9:58. Exactly two minutes later a loud knocking noise filled the room. Leave it to the interns to be exactly on time. Ha. She’s probably scared I’ll bite her head off if she’s late. They’re always scared of me…and I’ve never figured out why…
On her way to her door she realized that for once, having an intern could be helpful. Aiden never said she couldn’t put this girl to work as a secretary.
As she opened the door, she realized that it was the girl she had almost hit that morning. She gave her a polite smile, and opened the door a little further and let her in. "Hi, I’m –"
"Spencer," the woman interrupted Spencer.
Then, like a semi-truck slamming into her chest, the recognition struck her. She was right earlier when she thought she knew her.
"…A–ashley," Spencer stuttered, but immediately regained her composure. "Get the fuck out of my office."
Ashley just stared at her in shock. She’d known she wouldn’t have been welcomed with open arms, but this was definitely not the reaction she’d been expecting.
"Now." Spencer stated. "Get the fuck out of my office NOW!" she screamed.
Pushing Ashley back out into the hallway and slamming and locking the door, it all rushed back to her and she collapsed against the door as the tears began to fall.
