Ever the Same – (Chapter: Ch. 28: The Pineapple Juices)
“It’s not that easy!” the younger girl tried defending herself.
“Bullshit!” Ashley countered. By now, she was right in Spencer’s personal space, and she was definitely letting her have it.
So much for having a quiet discussion.
A small realization hit Spencer. “Who are you to attack me because I’m not saying anything?!”
The brunette glared hard at her. “Don’t you dare make this about me, Carlin,” she said with a low, harsh voice.
Spencer could tell that she’d hit a rough spot, but she did have a point; however, it was probably not the best time to bring up said point.
“Well, it’s true, Ashley! Before we were even together you kept putting me on this emotional roller coaster ride! You kept your feelings to yourself and hardly ever opened up…” Spencer’s bottom lip trembled, like she was about to cry. She sucked in a trembling breath. “Why is it so bad when I do it?”
“God, Spencer, that’s not even the point!” Ashley shook her head. She was still fuming. “I know I did those things, and I’m in the process of changing that! Don’t tell me you don’t notice!” She paused for a moment waiting for a response she knew wouldn’t come. “Damn it, Spence! Do you not even see that it’s seriously hurting me that you’re acting this way? It’s like I don’t even know you! Why are you doing this?!”
“Because!” the blonde screamed. She wanted the yelling to end. The fighting. It was awful.
The older girl’s jaw clenched. “Because why?!”
Fuck it. No more secrets.
Spencer squeezed her eyes shut, and a single tear made it’s way down her cheek. “Because I’m trapped!” She lowered her voice to just above a whisper. “I. Am. Trapped.”
“What?” Ashley croaked out, as she distanced herself from the other girl. She tried to piece the words together.
The blonde looked the older girl in the eye with a frown.
“The closet?” she questioned rhetorically. All the sudden she let out a bitter, non-humorous laugh. “That’s a bunch of bull.”
Ashley’s facial expression went from angered to confused in no time flat. She needed a further explanation.
Spencer continued, “Whoever decided to call it the closet had mental…mental…I don’t know what. They were just mental, because it’s not a closet…it’s more like a prison.”
