    Of course Ashley would come back. As soon as feasibly possible. There was no way she was leaving Spencer to deal with this alone. But she had to go. There was no other option now.

     

    Ashley reached the small outcropping of concrete the blonde was sitting on. She was facing out towards the ranch, the mountains Ashley’s ship were hidden in were shimmering in the distance.

     

    The brunette made sure her feet were noisy, announcing her presence before she appeared, not wanting to scare the girl.

     

    She settled on the piece of fallen wreckage next to Spencer and sat in quiet for awhile.

     

    Then she said what she had to,

     

    “I have to leave. Tomorrow.”

     

    Spencer didn’t move, didn’t say anything.

     

    “I’ll be back,” Ashley continued. “ They’ll find my craft tomorrow if I don’t fly out Spencer.” Still nothing from the other girl. “But I’ll be back as soon as I can. You know I won’t leave you alone.”

     

    At that, the blonde turned to face her. Her blue eyes were cold, hard. She said nothing, just staring at Ashley for awhile before turning back to watch the sunset again.

     

    “Spencer, I’ll come back,” Ashley reassured urgently, putting a hand on the girl’s elbow. “I promise you.”

     

    There was still no response. Nothing. Nothing at all.

     

    Eventually she figured it was best to leave Spencer alone, but she didn’t want to.

     

    ‘You’re going to be leaving her for longer than that tomorrow, she’ll have to get used to it.’ She had to do it, but she didn’t have to like it.

     

    Ashley was already in bed when Spencer returned much later in the night. She attempted to talk to her, but the blonde was still quiet, almost ignoring her.

     

    Eventually the smooth sounds of Spencer’s breath indicated she was asleep. Feeling oddly close to tears, Ashley rolled over and tried to get some sleep. It was a long time coming, but it eventually overtook her.

     

    When the edge of dawn crept over the windowsill, Ashley blinked awake. She needed to get dressed and leave now, to head off before the cadre of troops that would be heading towards the mountains soon.

     

    She got up and glanced towards the blonde’s bed. It was empty. Frowning, Ashley threw on her clothes. Gathering her gear she made a quick survey of the bathroom and nearby areas of where they were staying, no Spencer.

     

    The blonde was gone, unwilling to say goodbye or hear a goodbye.

     

    It hurt. Ashley was shocked at how much it hurt. She cared about the girl more than she could remember caring about someone in a long time, and she knew that it was the sheer pain that was blinding the blonde. But for Ashley, it hurt. She wanted to see Spencer just one more time, just one more look, one more touch, before their separation.

     

    She knew Spencer didn’t believe she was coming back. She would prove her wrong.

     

    It took an hour of walking to get to Henry. The sun was just coming up properly and glinting off his surface when she popped open the hatch and climbed in. She did a quick check of the cabin to make sure everything was secure and then ducked back to close the hatch.

     

    Settling into the pilots chair she gave one last soft glance over the landscape, her chest aching for the lost and lonely girl she was leaving behind, and then fired up the craft, and shot into the atmosphere.

    1. Oh please say that Spencer is hiding in the ship. I think she is. I really thought this was going to be a semi-happy Spashley story but then you did a complete turnaround and killed off Spencer’s family. Now I have no idea what’s going to happen. But you know what…I like it. I have a feeling that was the point all along. Anyway, love it!!

    2. So I just went and took a shower (was that too much information? probably) and thought about this story some more. See, I told you I was stalking you. Anyway, a thought occured to me. Spencer’s probably going to want to open up a can of whoop ass on the bad people, isn’t she? She can’t just let them get away with that. Isn’t Glen still out there in space to help her? Just my thoughts.
