Kardia Mou – (Chapter: The Beginning)

“You will regret it if you don’t.  You are obviously not sure about him, and if he’s what’s right it will work out.  He will wait for you, or the two of you will end up back together somehow.  I honestly believe that.  If not, there’s someone better.  Someone who can challenge you more, love you better.”

And that’s how the break-up happened.  To this day, I still get the blame for their separation.  Spence always says that if I hadn’t called her on it, she probably wouldn’t have broken up with him.  Though it was hard, and during the week it took them to break up, I didn’t get any sleep.  She cried herself to sleep every night, and I wished I could comfort her, I wanted to climb into her bed and hold her, but I was pretty sure that this was something she needed to do on her own.  I lay there and felt my heart break for the pain of my friend, my best friend.

And so, second semester was different.  We were both single.  We went out more, dancing, and parties.  Neither of which were really Spencer’s scene, but she came with me occasionally.  Other times she would stay home with another group and watch movies, while I went out and did the crazy wild thing.  I often came home on the weekends, drunk, and crawled into her bed.  Mine was lofted and we had no ladder, so scaling the side was quite a task sober, let alone after a few drinks.  I thought nothing of it.  We were close friends and that was all.  One morning some friends came into our room to see if we wanted to go get breakfast with them.  Spencer sat up in bed and said hello, and I was lying on the other side of her.  When I sat up too, our friends were shocked, and exchanged a telling glance.  I laughed at them, and explained that I had been too drunk to climb into the loft last night and that it was no big deal.

Our perspectives changed second semester too.  Spencer was taking a Lesbian Writings course, and I was taking Psychology.  When we were covering the sexuality section in Psych, we shared many discussions about the subject.  I expressed that I would have liked to say that if the right woman came along, and I felt that way about her, I would have the guts to pursue it.  It would be a shame to pass up on the chance for love just because it happened to be with another woman.  Though adamant that it would probably never happen, Spencer agreed.
