    “I’d hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.”

    Trekking down the stairs she met her brother at the door, attempting a smile although it came out more as a grimace. Glen placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and carefully guided her out the door, pulling it gently shut behind them.

    “So your absolutely positive your ready to do this?” He inquired as they walked towards his car. Although his tone was casual, you could tell by the way his shoulders were braced that he was really quite worried.

    “She was my fiancé Glen. Adulterer or not, that doesn’t change the fact that I loved her.” She used the past tense, not because she was over her, but because she was mad. Not many people are capable of giving a dead person the cold shoulder, but Spencer managed.

    “Alright, but if you want to leave at any time, just tell me.” He could be so protective. And, as obnoxious as it was, Spencer found it rather endearing. Well, when she didn’t feel like throttling him.

    “Yes sir.” She settled into the passenger seat of his car, slipping the seatbelt across her waist as she stared out the window. It really was a nice California day today, which made her feel a bit betrayed by the weather. It could at least be cloudy or something.

     

    “Promise?” Glen probed, climbing into the drivers side and beginning the drive to the church where the service would be held. He knew he was pushing Spencer’s buttons, he was actually hoping to get a rise out of her. He missed their little sparring sessions, as odd as that sounded.

    “Glen!” The girl snapped, glaring at her brother. The little smirk on his face only made her brow furrow more as she settled her forehead back against the glass, huffing a little sigh. Her thumb idly traced the line of her scar beneath the cuff of her shirt, the small lumps where the sutures had been still feeling quite foreign to her touch.

    Silence settled between them until they arrived at the small church where already a line of people was shuffling inside. Some had their heads hung low, others talked and hugged with sad smiles on their faces. A few unfortunate young cousins milled about, looking uncomfortable in their fancy clothes and tugging on their mothers hands impatiently. Spencer could emphasize with them. She didn’t really want to be here either.
