North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: The Newlyweds…)

    “You’re beautiful.”

Ashley had spent the last hour getting reacquainted with Spencer’s body—this new body, this new texture that came with the passing of years. She was more beautiful than ever, her features more defined, her looks more mature. Ashley had yet to know this version of her until now. That night two weeks ago when they had fallen into bed and eventually each other, the brunette didn’t take the time to rediscover her former lover. Tonight, there was no one else, nowhere else, and nothing else to cloud their experience of each other. There was time, there were words, and there was no more waiting.

“No, you’re beautiful. I can’t even believe how beautiful you are. I can’t believe I get to touch you,” Spencer said, her fingers lost in Ashley’s hair.

    “Spence?”

    “Yeah?”

“What are you and Rachel going to do about the wedding?”

“What do you mean?” Spencer asked, noticing how tense she became at the mention of her name.

“Like, do you cancel the cake…un-invite your family…un-book the venue?”

“Well, no one can ever say you don’t know how to kill a moment, that’s for sure,” Spencer said, moving her fingers lazily over the small of Ashley’s back, “I don’t know, Ash. I haven’t really given it much thought yet. Why?”

“No reason. I don’t know. I don’t know where my head’s at right now. Everything’s happening so fast, you know?”

“I know, but there will be plenty of time to deal with all that. Right now, you should just relax. We’re here. We’re together—finally—and that’s all that matters.”

    “You’re right, I’m sorry.”

    “No apologies…I understand.”

Ashley nodded. She didn’t understand the connection she had to Spencer. She didn’t understand where it came from. She didn’t understand how it managed to span an entire decade and remain as intense as it was in the very beginning. All she knew is that she needed it.

“We should sleep, huh?” Spencer asked, her voice already sounding far away.

    “Yeah, we should.”

Ashley pulled the covers up and over Spencer’s body, appreciating the simple action more than she ever had before.

“Goodnight,” she whispered in Spencer’s ear before wrapping her arms around the blonde and falling into a deep and peaceful sleep.
