Seize the Day – (Chapter: Chapter 3)

“I’ll think about it. For now I would really just like a hot shower and some breakfast if that’s alright.” Ashley lied as she fought against the wave of nausea that was swelling up in the pit of her stomach. Food was the last thing on her mind.

"Alright, I’ll just get started on breakfast then," she responded flatly. “I’m guessing you share the same love for pancakes as your father, so that’s what we’re having. Is that alright with you?”

Ashley was fighting the urge to get up and break something, but she knew she could never do anything like that in front of Helen. She was tired of hearing about her parents, especially her father, and was ready to tell the older woman to never mention his name again, but then decided against it. He was her son. She thought with defeat. Who am I to say she can’t talk about her son? “That’ll be fine.” She grumbled from the bed. And who cares if I hate pancakes? Hell, I hate living here, I hate that I’ve lost all my friends, I hate having to start a new school, I hate that we have a loud rooster on the roof, and I hate that I have no parents. God how I wish they were still here, even mom who made my life a living hell. She mused sadly. “Just make them small.”

Helen stared suspiciously at her and Ashley shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “Dear, Karen told me you simply despised pancakes.” She calmly accused.

“Then why’d you suggest them?” Ashley griped bitterly.

Helen ignored her granddaughter’s foul tone. “I want to start learning things about you.” She carefully explained. “How you deal with problems, how you answer questions, how you treat yourself, how you’re feeling.”

“I’m feeling great!” Ashley shouted sarcastically at Helen. The older woman opened her mouth to reply but then quickly closed it. Ashley knew Helen
was fighting back a lecture on respect, a lecture she really didn’t want to hear. Helen knew Ashley’s rudeness was unintentional, and decided there was no need for a lecture. I’d also be angry if I’d lost my parents at her age. She thought solemnly. It was hard losing my Son, but I’ve dealt with loss before, and know how to deal with it. She on the other hand hasn’t lost a soul until now, and probably has no idea how to deal with it.

    1. Really like your story. I like the different scenery and perspective. Can’t wait til Spencer finds out that Ashley is into girls…(if she hadn’t figured it out already.. “Madison… sh- He” How many times did she almost say she? LOL…) Loved it!
