Spencer Carlin: The great Pretender?
“Christine, doesn’t deserve to have a daughter like Ashley…She treats her like shit! I had to talk Ashley out of running across the room, and beating the hell out of her more than once…At first I thought Christine was drunk, but then Ashley explained that she doesn’t need to drink to be a belligerent bitch she just is. It was awful!”
Spencer’s P.O.V.
Then Dad did something that reminded me he’s so great, he asked how old Ashley is. I know that doesn’t mean anything to you, but to me it means a lot. It means the Social Worker in him is at work. He’s always willing to do what he can for anybody in need; especially younger people.”
She’s about two months younger than me. I answered.
Then he asked about her dad.
All I know is…he’s in some rock band…they use to be big in the ‘80’s, and he’s on the road right now.
Both parents look at their daughter intently, showing genuine interest.
Every time I ask Ash more about what he’s like, Ashley either freezes up, or changes the subject…The funny thing is; whenever that happens she always hums this tune…
Spencer hums Hold On.
“What’s Ashley’s last name, again?” My dad asked me excitedly.
Davies. I answered not knowing why he had become excited all the sudden.
Arthur’s eyes light up.
“Wait here I’ll be right back!” He instructed my Mom and me before quickly leaving the room.
I asked Mom if she knew what he was up to, but she just shrugged her shoulders. When Dad returned he had an old tape player, and a tape. He plugged the player in, and inserted the tape. My Mom and I were still oblivious to why Dad what dad was doing, but when the tape began to play I knew. It was the song Ashley’s lips are always singing.
“Sound familiar, Spence?” Dad asks smiling.
I nodded with a smile as I continued to listen. Dad let the song finish. Then, he turned the player off.
“That tape is by a band called Purple Venom…Their lead singer’s name is Raife Davies!”Dad explained happily.”
I must make Ashley miss him more when I bring him up…that’s why she acts differently. I said aloud.
