Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 5: Loose Ends)
So, Ellen definitely had money to pay me, but I actually like the arrangement we have and so does she. Ellen wasn’t a person to just let me do all the work. She loved her horses and did most of the feeding. She just had a hard time, due to arthritis in her hands, doing the stall cleaning and exercising. So like the past years, we arranged that I would come over every other day to make sure the horses were exercised, groomed and stalls were clean. If she was to be out of town I would cover all of the feeding everyday as well.
As I was getting ready to leave she mentioned that I should come over Friday because her grand-daughter was going to be visiting and she thought we would get along great. Ellen had mentioned her grand-daughter off and on again; always calling her by what I assumed was her nickname, ‘Shly. Last I had heard from Ellen was that she was following in her father’s footsteps pursuing a career in the music business and getting a degree in business in hopes of starting her own record label or something like that.
Awesome, just what I needed was to get stuck talking to some rich bitch from LA. I remembered Mr. Davies telling me his daughter wasn’t really the type for hard work. I am sure his spoiled daughter was right up my alley I thought sarcastically. I politely declined saying that I had already made plans and said hopefully I would meet her next time. I was thankful that Kaylen and I were going to Josh’s party tomorrow.
Kaylen and I met up at her place after I got off work at the clinic to get ready for the party.
“You should have seen the horse I got to work on today” I yelled through the shower curtain to Kaylen. “He is a race horse from Buellton. He stepped on a nail on the track where he was training. I got to do the x-rays, pull the nail the frog of his hoof and set up…”
“Shut the hell up!” Kaylen barked back. “All I got today at my clinic was some old lady’s precious Persian cat that had an upset stomach from eating 6 cans of Fancy Feast. I got puked on 3 times by that damn thing!”
