Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 5: Loose Ends)
“Didn’t you hook up with her last year?” she asked. "Kind of left that one with loose ends if I remember correctly." She was refering to my very quick departure to home the very next day.
“Maybe.”
“Oh whatever you totally did! Well looks like she wants a repeat. She is headed this way so I am going to hustle that cutie at the pool table.” She motioned to a handsome dark hared boy holding a pool que. “Make sure you find me before you leave!”
“Wait, Kaylen I don’t think I want a repeat!” It was too late she was already headed to the pool table. Sheesh,…so much for that wingman thing. For the last couple of weeks the only girl I can think of is one that I have never met and apparently only a figment of my imagination.
“Don’t want to repeat what Spencer?” a voice whispered in my ear. I shift around on the couch to see Jessie perched on the arm leaning in toward me. Wow, summer had treated her well. She is still cute as ever.
“Jess…. so how are you doing? Sorry I never caught up with you before I left for the summer.”
“That’s ok. I mean I was kind of bummed, that I didn’t hear from you after we…uh well, I mean when we, errr…..you know…..” She hesitated and looked embarrassed.
“You mean you were bummed I didn’t call you after we had sex.” I stated bluntly. Uhg…smooth Carlin. Alcohol had a good and bad way of making me very straight forward.
“Yeah, exactly.” Jess said with a laugh. “Sorry it’s just when you are looking directly at me with those blue eyes of yours I kind of loose train of thought.”
I leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.
“You are a sweet girl Jess, I am sorry I didn’t call you back. I didn’t mean to belittle our time together, I just wasn‘t ready for a commitment.”
She nodded looking disappointed.
“I heard that you and Jena had a tough split early last year and that you decided relationships weren’t the way to go.” Jess said.
“Man, gossip sure gets around down here. Well the truth of it is yeah…we had a rough split. She decided she still liked boys and I decided that I still liked girls. I wasn’t about to get tied into a relationship again when I wasn’t ready. Nothing personal Jess. You seem like a great girl.”
She smiled and showed off her adorable dimples. Alcohol was clouding my better judgment as I let my eyes drift over her body.
“Come on. Let’s go get another drink.” I said as I grabbed her hand and pulled her off the couch.
Jess and I started taking shots and playing pool with Kaylen and the cute boy she had wrapped around her pinkie finger. The night became a whirlwind of events with alcohol blurred edges.
