Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 9: Little White Lie)

“Deal!” She said getting out of my truck. “I will catch up with you in class on Monday. Give me a call if any more crazy-ass drama comes your way!!”

I gave her the bird as she closed the door of the truck grinning. I yawned, it was almost 6pm and I still had to go exercise Ellen’s two other horses. The 40 minute drive was looking ominous so I sorted through my ipod looking for some music to keep me awake. I settled on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Show Your Bones album.

I was still rocking out when I pulled up to Ellen’s barn; I think I had finally got my second wind. I headed in through the large front entry and was just about to walk through the open tack room door when I heard two voices and stopped immediately. I was turned to walk away, but I couldn’t help to listen in when I heard Ellen’s familiar voice.

“I really think that you should give her a chance Ashley. You might find that you have some much more in common than you really think. It would be good for you to have a friend besides me up here.”

“I know you are looking out for me Grandma, but the whole reason for me to move up here with you was to get out of L.A. and focus on doing some recording and helping dad with starting up his new label.” Ashley replied.

It seems as though I have underestimated this girl. Just because she didn’t do “hard” work didn’t mean she didn’t work hard. She was driven toward her profession just as I was driven to mine.

“Ashley, I am so glad that you are up here with me, but I just don‘t think that hanging out with your grandma and working all the time is very healthy. You had your heart broke so long ago, sweetheart. Hiding yourself away from people will only make you bitter. I just think that you need someone your own age that understands where you are coming from to talk to.”

I was torn. I wanted to get to know Ashley. I know she felt something when we shook hands. I know I did. I wanted the chance to feel it again. At the same time I didn’t know if I could handle listening to her talk about her boy filled life and how some guy broke her heart. I had enough of that kind of talk with Kaylen.
