The Untouchable Element – (Chapter: 1-Soul On Fire)

    SOUL ON FIRE
    [August 24th, 2009]

“Yo, Spencer! You should wake up now, sport.“ A familiar voice softly whispered in my sensitive ears. When I felt the presence of my older brother hovering above my bed, my body reluctantly responded to his unpleasant suggestion. I propped myself up on the bed with one elbow as my eyelids were forced open, only to catch the embarrassing sight of Glen checking himself out in the mirror. He stood before me as a cocky young man overeager to look over his own reflection. It was his first day as a Junior at King High School, so it was natural that he wanted to look his best. I just didn’t appreciate the fact he wanted to groom himself in my bedroom after waking me up unexpectedly. “Get the hell out of my room!” I say with great annoyance as I attempted to cover myself with the heavy but comfortable sheets that welcomed my body lovingly each night before he interrupted the action. “I’m assuming you either forgot to turn on your alarm again or your snores drowned out the noise. Look at the time, genius.” He replied with a wicked grin on his face. His smiles were usually very boyish and charming,  but this time his face was written with irritating amusement as those dimples poked out through both sides of his cheeks. My head quickly snapped to the right side of the bed where a sad excuse of an end table supported the worst digital alarm clock ever invented. It was 6:45 A.M. and the school bus would be in front of the house at 7:15. I didn’t realize I had already royally screwed myself on the first day of high school, but it was no surprise. Attention everyone who gives a damn: Spencer Carlin, the most clumsy social misfit in the neighborhood, was barely taking over the role as a meager freshman but unbeknownst to anyone besides Glen, her first day of high school ever was going unplanned!  “Son of a bitch, I overslept! Ugh, get out of my room so I can get dressed!” I ordered, kicking off the blankets that had betrayed me this morning. My older brother shook his head while he exploded with laughter. “Watch your mouth, Spence! If mom or Tyler hear you cursing, your first day of high school is not the only thing you’ll be worrying about.” He continued snickering as I mustered all my god-given strength to push him out of the room.  My back met the now slammed shut door as my eyes quickly scanned the dresser in front of me. Last night, I mentally prepared an image of what I would wear to make all the high school kids do a double-take as I walked past them. Now all I had to look forward to is the hope of being noticed by anyone interested in checking out the new girl from Ohio. I groaned in frustration as I desperately rummaged a couple of drawers for clean panties and socks. ‘Great, if I take a shower then I’ll miss the bus for sure and Tyler would definitely run late for work if I made him drop me off.’ I thought to myself, stripping off the loose pajamas I slept in off of my body. Tyler Grant is my step-father, a wonderful and hardworking man my mother Paula re-married after not being able to work things out with my real father, Arthur Carlin. It wasn’t a bitter divorce since my parents never had problems with each other. They just weren’t in love anymore; or at least Paula wasn’t in love with Arthur. Their jobs and busy schedules kept them apart and the only thing they had in common was their two children. It was extremely difficult for my dad since he loved her to pieces, but he agreed to separate anyway in order for her to pursue true happiness. This was three years ago right after we moved to Colorado from Ohio and although I wasn’t happy about the divorce then, I stayed with Arthur so I could finish Junior High School in Colorado. Glen moved to Los Angeles with my mother after she found a job as a Nurse at a local hospital and eventually, Paula met Tyler Grant and his son, Clay. Clay Grant is one of the most articulate young men I have ever met and I couldn’t be happier having him as a step-brother. I consider him to be one of my very best friends since he and I get along quite well, and he understands me a little bit better than Glen but I don’t want to compare; I love having two older brothers in my life.
