This Must Be It … Welcome To the New Year – (Chapter: 4: If You Don’t Want To Talk About It Then It Isn’t Love)

    “No, I think you’re wrong.”

The blonde looked up at her friend startled.

“Spence, I shouldn’t have kissed you. I was drunk and upset. And while it wasn’t the smoothest move on my part, you’ve been keeping these feelings from me for awhile. You never told me!”

“You were with Leslie!” Spencer exclaimed, her heart beginning to race at the accusation. “I couldn’t tell you anything when you were with someone else!”

“It’s me Spence! You tell me everything!”

“Well apparently not everything” Spencer retorted.

The older girl’s eyes dropped in defeat. “Look what did you expect me to do?” the blonde exclaimed, “Knock on your door and profess my undying love for you? It doesn’t work that way and you know it Ashley!”

Ashley jerked her head up at the younger girl’s words. She tilted her head and looked at Spencer, perplexed. Did she say love? Ashley shook her head ridding her mind of the ridiculous thought.

“No, I guess not” Ashley responded softly. She kicked a pebble off the edge of the porch steps and watched it ricochet off the potted plant nearby. “So where does that leave us?”

The younger girl thought for a moment, pondering the situation, “I guess the only thing left is how you feel” she replied solemnly.

    Ashley groaned.

“Gee Ash you sure know how to make a girl feel wanted” Spencer scoffed.

“Hey come on!” Ashley replied, “It’s just … hard”

“What’s so hard about this Ashley? Either you want to be with me or you don’t”

“Not everything is as black and white as you want it to be Spencer”

“So you felt nothing the other night?” Spencer asked, watching the brunette’s eyes carefully.

Ashley thought back to their kiss on the coffee table and her eyes pooled with desire. Spencer caught the look and smiled inwardly. I knew it.

“I was drunk Spencer … I’m not sure what I felt”

The blonde scowled, and looked away from her friend.

“That kiss was amazing though” the brunette whispered. With one hand she gripped Spencer’s shoulder and eased her closer. Ashley leaned towards her blonde companion and brought herself merely centimeters from the blonde’s lips. She stared into Spencer’s eyes and nuzzled her nose against the younger girl’s. “Maybe we can see if we really feel anything?”

Spencer’s eyes fluttered shut and she felt Ashley’s warm breath on her cheek.

As Ashley leaned in to close the distance between them the brunette felt two hands pressing against her shoulders shoving her away. She opened her eyes and frowned at the blonde.

“I won’t play your games Ashley” Spencer replied weakly. She rubbed her forehead in frustration. “I don’t think…” she choked back a cough, “I don’t think we should see each other till you figure out what you want from me”

    Ashley was flabbergasted, “Wait, what?”

“You need to sort through your feelings Ashley; you can’t mess with me like this. Saying you aren’t sure what you want and then trying to kiss me. We can’t do this to each other; we’re so much better then this.”

The older girl looked across the street and watched the clouds drift by, they sat there in silence for a few moments before Ashley turned back to her best friend. “I should probably go then”

    Spencer nodded.

“Can I…” Ashley blushed, avoiding Spencer’s gaze, “can I give you a hug?” She asked meekly.

Spencer looked at Ashley and opened her arms wide pulling the brunette into a tight embrace. Ashley wrapped her arms around Spencer and suddenly felt gooey liquid seeping through her fingers. Her eyes went wide in realization and she pulled away from the blonde, Oh shit.

Ashley hid her hand behind her back and stood up hurrying away from the porch. “Bye Spencer” she said before hopping in her car and driving off.

Spencer sat bewildered at the brunette’s sudden exit and stood up making her way back inside.

Paula spotted her daughter heading towards the backyard and practically screeched. “Spencer Carlin!” she exclaimed, “What did you do to your dress?”

    1. I don’t blame Spencer for telling Ashley that they can’t see each other until Ashley sorts out her feelings. It would be too hard. I’m just wondering what there is to sort out. Ashley should go for it. She’s going to lose Spencer’s friendship if she doesn’t.

    2. Ohh Ashley Ashley how you make me laugh!! haha! As funny as the ending was I’m still mad that Ashley could be so clueless towards Spencer’s feelings! PMS please!

    3. I discovered this gem of a story today and red all 4 chapters and was grieved by the fact that you never finished. This is such a very unique and believable story, please finish it… You are an awesome and gifted writer, don’t let that go to waste. Please update.
