We're Going Down – (Chapter: The Taste of Ink)
“Spencer.” Ashley looked at me before she got out of the car. “I really am sorry, for everything." Then she hopped out of the car and shut the door. This girl never lets me get a word in before she leaves. Oh well, I shrugged and drove home. As I laid in bed I couldn’t go to sleep. I just kept thinking about that stupid kiss. Her lips were so perfect. And things were so intense, it’s like we couldn’t get enough of each other. I felt so tied to her, emotionally as well as physically. I’d never felt like that before, and I didn’t know that I liked it. This girl that I had only known a couple of days was getting me all worked up. Finally my brain quit functioning and I fell asleep.
When I got to school the next morning I decided against finding Madison and Chelsea first thing. I knew they would be pining for information on last night and I really didn’t want to talk about it at the moment. I walked toward the library in hopes of skipping first period and sleeping. I was still so tired from last night. When I got to the library I went to the back corner desk and closed my eyes on my arms.
As soon as I woke up I knew somebody was watching me. I didn’t see anyone around but I could feel eyes on me. I got my books together and ran my fingers through my hair a few times, still not quite awake. I looked at my phone to check the time. Shit, I slept through second and third period too. Oh well guess it’s time for lunch. I stood up and started to walk toward the cafeteria, but spotted someone move from the stacks. I walked toward where the person had been and caught them turning the corner into another row. Was somebody following me? This is weird. I decided to turn the other way and catch them walking up the row. When I turned the corner I ran straight into Ashley.
“Were you watching me?” I asked her as I picked the books I had dropped off the floor.
“I’m sorry. I just came in here to study and saw you asleep. I thought about waking you up so you wouldn’t miss lunch but then you woke up and I didn’t want to seem like a stalker. I’ll leave now.” And then she was gone, walking back through the stacks before I could stop her. Geez this girl confused me. I shook my head and went to the cafeteria.
I should have known going in there would be a bad idea. First Madison came and grabbed me, asking me where I had been all day. I told her I fell asleep in the library and she started getting on to me about how I wouldn’t be able to make up the test I missed in second unless I had a note from my mom. I started zoning out after that. I got my food and went to the table where Chelsea and Aiden sat, Madison still talking about something.
“So Spence, where’s Ashley?” Chelsea asked when I sat down. Great, here we go already. Can’t a girl enjoy her lunch without getting twenty questions?
“I don’t know, haven’t seen her.” I lied. No point in bringing up the library incident.
“Oh, well how did last night go?” Madison asked, winking. ‘This should be fun’ I thought to myself with heavy sarcasm.
“It was fine.”
“Fine? I don’t think fine is enough of an explanation. What did you do? How late were you out? Did you get some?” Okay really is that appropriate?
“Mads it was fine. We danced and got ice cream and weren’t out late and no I barely know the girl is that enough for you?” I guess my tone was a little sharper than I meant it to be because Madison shut up really fast. Chelsea started talking about her upcoming art project and I was grateful for the peace for the time.
I spent the rest of lunch sulking to myself and thinking about how weird Ashley was acting. It was like she didn’t want to be around me. Maybe she really did get freaked out last night. All I knew was it was really bugging me that I cared this much. I’m not the type to care about people. Okay that sounds bad, I care about people, I just don’t get wrapped up in girls. They never want to stick around long enough. So why was I getting so involved with this one, when she didn’t seem to want anything to do with me?
