You Only Live Once – Why Not Enjoy It – (Chapter: 24 – Christmas with the Family)

Ashley swallowed nervously.  She knew what she wanted to say but was unsure if the words would actually come out or not.  Cautiously she stood, keeping hold of Spencer’s hand that squeezed in reassurance.

“For the first time in ages, I’ve felt acceptance.  To be honest, I’m most thankful for family.  Of all people here, I know the least about what a real family is.”  All eyes were fixated on her as she fidgeted with her glass of wine.  “I’m not only thankful for my sister Kyla but for you all.  You’ve given me something that I never thought I would have.”  She held back her tears and smiled at Spencer.

“You’ve given me a reason to wake up every morning with a smile on my face.  I feel so blessed to have someone like Spencer in my life but also each and every one of you.  Especially you Granny C.”  The elderly woman brushed the moisture from her eyes while chuckling.

“I’m honored that you have all graciously accepted me into this group.  I’ve never wanted anything more and today, I’ve realized that it is exactly what I imagined it would be.  Nothing less than perfection, even in the simplest of ways.”  With that the young girl took her rightful place next to Spencer, cupping both of her hands in hers.  She glanced down and smiled at the ring that her girlfriend wore.

Last but not least; Kyla.  The girl stood, running her sweaty palms over her jeans.  “First, I’d like to say…thanks for having invited me.  You guys are absolutely great.”  A round of ‘Yeahs!’ and ‘You’re always welcome here!’ were shared before she continued.

“There’s one thing I’m most thankful for this year and I’m sure most of you would agree.”  The room had died down again; every word she spoke was being taken in.

“Miracles.  I’m grateful for miracles.”  Kasey’s father locked eyes with the young girl.  His eyes were clouded with tears, matching those of Kyla’s.  “Kasey’s my miracle.  I reciprocate her sentiments and I quote: Without her, who knows where I would be.”

Kasey lowered her eyes.  ‘What did I do to deserve her?’  She thought.

“Miracles don’t happen every day.  All it took last year around this same time was a miracle.”  Everyone nodded, remembering Kasey’s battle with leukemia.  “With that miracle came a series of blessings; the love of my life, strong friendships, and a chance to meet such a wonderful family.”  And with that said, the young girl sat down and linked hands with her girlfriend.

Both families ate their Christmas dinner engaging in light conversation after such heartfelt speeches.  Traditions like these are everlasting and do nothing but reinforce bonds.  The evening came to an end with the Davies sisters returning home after midnight.  Promising to describe their evenings to another, they headed to bed, both looking forward to the morning where they could reunite with their girlfriends once again.

    3. that was wonderfully, man kasey is like everyones little lap dog, she does anything to make the people she cares about happy even though she tries to uphold this bad girl image, it’s just so cute, i love how you went back and forth between the two families and things were the same but yet different, the carlin’s were more classic while the dennison’s were red neck….pms

    5. I have certainly missed this story and you told the Christmas story with both families so beautifully with a touch of charm mixed with humor. I cried several times with the “being thankful” monologues, which were expressed from the heart. The love stories you have so delicately weaved with Spencer & Ashley and Kasey & Kyla are nothing short of endearing and romantic. Well done…PMS
