Bette pulled out a new cigarette. “I wouldn’t know.”
“You really shouldn’t…”
Bette cut her off when she leaned forward and scowled. She wrapped her index finger around the belt loop of Tina’s jeans and gave a hard yank forcing Tina to step towards her. Bette reached into Tina’s front pocket fishing for the matches.
Tina forced herself to keep breathing evenly but being so close to Bette made it damn near impossible. “Other pocket.”
Bette grunted as she dug her hand into Tina’s other pocket then sighed in satisfaction when her fingers closed around the matchbook. She lit her cigarette as she settled back into the darkness. Not wanting to be rude and to give herself time to think, she turned her head blowing smoke away from Tina. “Tell me why you would go looking for someone you hate?”
Tina left her legs entangled in Bette’s. There was something oddly comforting about being so close. The irony of their physical position was not lost on Bette. She eyed the distance between their upper bodies. They were so close and so far, yet again.
“It’s true. At one point I hated you or at least I tried to.” Tina watched the shadowed figure take a slow puff. “Damn it, I can’t think when you do that.”
Bette arched an eyebrow before she realized Tina couldn’t see the gesture in the dark. She held the cigarette between two nimble fingers. “When I do what?”
Tina glared. “You are leaning back into the shadows so I can’t see your facial expressions but there’s just enough light so I can see every curve of your body. Do you have you own God damn lighting specialist?” Tina snatched the cigarette. “Then you have to start smoking this thing.” She waved the cigarette angrily. “Like some sort of femme fatale waiting to seduce Bogart.”
Bette did her best to smirk. In truth, she was far from feeling smug. Even though she hadn’t been drinking she felt the small balcony sway underneath her. “Sorry.” She hoped like hell she had managed to sound insincere.
“No, your not.” Tina leaned forward to join Bette in the shadows. She held the cigarette in front of Bette’s lips, waiting patiently for Bette to claim what was hers. “I’m the one who’s sorry. I’m sorry our lives came to this. Sorry, we continue to hurt each other. At one point, I even tried to be sorry I went to the artist dinner oh so many years ago.” Tina stopped. She closed the distance between them until her nose came in contact with one of the many wild curls. Tina took a deep breath. She let the familiar smell of Bette ensnare her. “Why,” she whispered. Tina gently cleared her throat and began again. “Why is it I feel like an addict?”

Before I read I’ll make a quick comment on the Hispanic thing. I noticed that “South of Nowhere” has Valery Ortiz. Now, I know she may be a bit young, but if she wasn’t on SoN…well you get the idea. Granted that’s just based on her surname I don’t know her complete background.
I say post both endings. It gives us more to read. lol I completely suck at the noir thing mostly because I don’t understand what noir is exactly. Sort of like how I don’t understand what is goth. This is both lovely and sad. I like it. PPS!
Lamentamini, Film Noir means black film. It is not really a genre as much as a mood. Most Noir were filmed in Black and white (even after color became popular. They are most often detective or crime dramas. The most common theme is the fight against the “man”. These films came into being after WWII, left behind was the gaiety of the twenties and the patriotism of the war. Noir are of course very bleak, it is near impossible to win against the system.
“Like some sort of femme fatale waiting to seduce Bogart.” — that’s actually pretty much exactly what I thought when I read your summary and the beginning of the story. Glad to see you posting again. It’s hard to choose between sappy and noir, they’re too different and I like both of them, posting two endings wouldn’t be bad either. Waiting for more :)
this is really good! i enjoyed every second of it. i love the writing and the images that was running through my head as i read this masterpiece!! Keep it coming!! Thanks!
That noir effect really add another dimention to the desolate and angst between these two. I really enjoyed reading this, posting both endings would be fine by me… but save the sappy one last ;)
This is a beautiful piece, you write very well and have captured the characters wonderfully
WOW, was I ever surprised when I saw that you had posted. Reading this makes me realize just how much I miss your writing. You are a very talented woman. Whatever ending you want to post is fine, I just hope you keep writing. Oh and yes I was also very surprised to see your restraint about Papi, because I have heard you on this subject. And before you start yelling at me…yes you are right about it.
So happy to see you back…and what a comeback!!! Wow, wow, WOW!!! As for the ending…totally up to you, but it is winter in Seattle, which means it is dark, cold, and oh so dreary. So, happy sappy is good for me! Thanks!
welcome back, i kept thinking when you would…well, i would love something happy sappy in this noir story which indeed dark and sad and powerful and intense…you can post both of them of course, but i would have to read happy several times then :) and really, welcome back
Hey V! IC is too busy casting Asians to play Hispanics to have any left to play Asians. Oh, maybe you mean the far east Asians. I think there are a few on the west coast, even up in Canada, so why IC is blind to them I can’t answer. The lord moves in mysterious ways, but at least this season is shaping up better than the confused pile of shit last season was (again, no explanation for that). Good to see you back.
This is interesting and let see more, thanks!
glad to see your name again. very intense. either ending for me. thanks.
