Bette felt the heat rush into her face. She wanted to reach out. She wanted to once again feel the euphoria of Tina in her arms. Yet she remained still. She knew she could no longer pretend to be indifferent. There was no doubt, in Bette’s mind, that Tina had felt the rise of her temperature. “What do you want of me? I don’t know if I have anything else to give.” The admission shocked Bette. Why was it Tina always had the power to hurt Bette but still have her begging for more? She had promised herself she wouldn’t allow this to happen again. Why then, she asked herself, did she reach out and brush a stray lock away from Tina’s face?

“What are we doing?” Tina asked as she laid her head on Bette’s shoulder. Her lips were now mere inches from her former lover’s neck. The heat of Bette’s body was making Tina’s head swim.

It took all of Bette’s resolve not to ravage Tina on the spot. “Maybe we should stop this.” Even as she said the words she moved her hands to Tina’s waist, pulling her closer.

When Tina’s body pressed up against Bette’s, they both knew it was too late. “Just once more. Please. Bette, just once more.”

Bette leaned closer to comply with Tina’s urgent pleas. There would be no fighting it. They both knew it was futile to resist a force of this magnitude.

Tina clung to Bette. “Please, I need to see you. I want to know it is truly you this time.”

The statement puzzled Bette. Instead of questioning, she turned them so the street light fell across her face. She pulled Tina closer, refusing to let her slip away this time. “Tee…” She leaned down, her need to taste overwhelming.

Neither one of the women heard the balcony door slide open. It was the gasp of surprise that stop their lips from meeting. “Oh. Sorry.” The young woman blushed. She took a step backwards. “I thought,” she gazed at Bette’s arms wrapped around Tina’s slender waist, “you were out here alone. Sorry.” She turned on her heel and practically sprinted back inside.

Under normal circumstances, an interruption like that would have jarred them back to their senses. Both women knew they were past the age where making out in dark corners was socially acceptable. Sometimes logic and decorum fly out the window give way to the more basic instincts. This was one of those times.

    1. Before I read I’ll make a quick comment on the Hispanic thing. I noticed that “South of Nowhere” has Valery Ortiz. Now, I know she may be a bit young, but if she wasn’t on SoN…well you get the idea. Granted that’s just based on her surname I don’t know her complete background.

    2. I say post both endings. It gives us more to read. lol I completely suck at the noir thing mostly because I don’t understand what noir is exactly. Sort of like how I don’t understand what is goth. This is both lovely and sad. I like it. PPS!

    3. Lamentamini, Film Noir means black film. It is not really a genre as much as a mood. Most Noir were filmed in Black and white (even after color became popular. They are most often detective or crime dramas. The most common theme is the fight against the “man”. These films came into being after WWII, left behind was the gaiety of the twenties and the patriotism of the war. Noir are of course very bleak, it is near impossible to win against the system.

    4. “Like some sort of femme fatale waiting to seduce Bogart.” — that’s actually pretty much exactly what I thought when I read your summary and the beginning of the story. Glad to see you posting again. It’s hard to choose between sappy and noir, they’re too different and I like both of them, posting two endings wouldn’t be bad either. Waiting for more :)

    5. That noir effect really add another dimention to the desolate and angst between these two. I really enjoyed reading this, posting both endings would be fine by me… but save the sappy one last ;)

    6. WOW, was I ever surprised when I saw that you had posted. Reading this makes me realize just how much I miss your writing. You are a very talented woman. Whatever ending you want to post is fine, I just hope you keep writing. Oh and yes I was also very surprised to see your restraint about Papi, because I have heard you on this subject. And before you start yelling at me…yes you are right about it.

    7. So happy to see you back…and what a comeback!!! Wow, wow, WOW!!! As for the ending…totally up to you, but it is winter in Seattle, which means it is dark, cold, and oh so dreary. So, happy sappy is good for me! Thanks!

    8. welcome back, i kept thinking when you would…well, i would love something happy sappy in this noir story which indeed dark and sad and powerful and intense…you can post both of them of course, but i would have to read happy several times then :) and really, welcome back

    9. Hey V! IC is too busy casting Asians to play Hispanics to have any left to play Asians. Oh, maybe you mean the far east Asians. I think there are a few on the west coast, even up in Canada, so why IC is blind to them I can’t answer. The lord moves in mysterious ways, but at least this season is shaping up better than the confused pile of shit last season was (again, no explanation for that). Good to see you back.
