    The same night – Bette and Tina at home

    “Bette, you’re going to have to tell me about how you know about courtesans and why you think this is good for our child.”

    Tina looked at her wife who was refusing to meet her eyes.

    “If you don’t explain this, then I never want to hear anything again about a…courtesan. You have to talk to me, and I don’t mean maybe.”

    Going back – Bette at Yale

    For years Bette had stone-walled or side-stepped Tina’s queries about her early sex life. In fact, she had side-stepped everyone. Not even Alice knew anything. Tonight, though, it was different. Bette knew it was time to tell Tina everything…Well, not everything, but enough that maybe she would understand.

    Bette’s thoughts drifted back many years as she started to tell Tina about her first months in Los Angeles and how she knew about lesbian courtesans. She was barely 20 years old when she showed up to participate in her intern semester at the LA County Museum of Art. She chose the second semester because she could stay through a large part of the summer and expand her experience. She would learn more and it would look better on her resume.

    It was a period of her life that was a watershed in so many ways. She got her first significant experience in administration in the art world, an experience which she loved. It made her realize that perhaps her niche in the art world was not in creating art, but in managing art. She also learned to love Los Angeles and knew that after finishing college she would try to begin her career in this city.

    Another huge watershed was that she also became sexually experienced.

    Bette Porter had had no sexual experiences in high school partially because she had Melvin Porter for a father. He had watched her like a hawk, a hawk that would be dangerous to anyone who touched her. Although some of the young men of her acquaintance were interested in Bette, they had a healthy fear of her father and so were “gentlemen.” Those few who were more perceptive also noticed that Bette Porter did not seem overly interested in them in a physical way.

    11. You write in such an interesting and clear manner that the pages just fly by. So you need to write more, please. You have struck a common chord if one judges by the comments left for the last chapter and for this one. Funnyone’s pretty funny “The High-Priced Spread”. I like that. You just have a great way of integrating different storylines from the past and the present. Well done, pancha.

    15. was a difficult time for Bette cause been under the protection of Melvin was hard and then she wanted to get some experience and wasn’t enough for her. Is a very good think that B&T talk about it, i hope Tina won’t freak out! the next chapter please i want to know the woman that changed Bette’s live! very good very good post

    22. Okay I’m really slow. I forgot Meg Ryan was in Top Gun. *dies of shame* This chapter made me think about that time in my life. I remember thinking at first, “OMG I had sex!” or something along those lines, but eventually I felt somewhat dirty even though I loved the guy. Then awhile later I looked back and realized it just wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Same thing happened the second time (yeah I’m pretty much a big noob when it comes to experience). And now that I have said way too much about myself, on with the story.

    24. Nice insight into Bette’s past. I like how Bette’s telling of her past is her reminiscing or reliving her memory interspersed with the present day. Can’t wait for the rest of the story. Hmmm, wondering who’s the girl who changed Bette’s life… Please post again soon.

    25. Well, at least Tina gets to look at the Cliffs notes of Bette’s sexual initiation. Still need to be convinced (as I’m sure does Tina) that the courtesan thing is the way to go. I don’t want to argue with you pancha, but I was also thinking of the expensive pros (the high priced spread, so to speak) whose elegantly shod tootsies only touched pavement entering/exiting limos, restaurants, and hotels. Believe me, for the price being exchanged, these girls weren’t ugly.

    27. This is very interesting. I’m guessing that Bette was a lesbian courtesan and not went to one. But I don’t understand why Bette can’t or don’t want to tell Tina the whole story, why is she leaving things out??? That’s disrespectful to Tina. Post soon, it’s a great story.
