Angelica’s Fifth Fourth ~ Chapter Six

As soon as she heard the music, Angelica began to pull Bette in the direction of the still-unseen carousel.  Normally, Bette would not have permitted the little girl to behave so impolitely, but she herself was catching her daughter’s enthusiasm, or perhaps, reacting to some deep memory of her own childhood excitement.

Tina considered stepping in to correct Bette’s parenting lapse, but the matching looks of wonder on mother and daughter’s faces touched her heart.

The music was loud and it was made even louder by the breeze that carried it to their ears. .They had already been on their way to the carousel and were two streets away when they had first heard the calliope.  As they got closer, a tired Angelica raised her arms, indicating she wanted to be carried.  Again, Bette obliged, contradicting the agreement both mothers had reached recently to wean their daughter from mommy-transport. It took a few seconds for Tina to realize that Bette was happy to carry their daughter since it meant that they would reach their destination more quickly.

Childhood memories meant that Bette was the first to spot the building that housed the merry-go-round.

    “Boo, over there!”

Angelica and Tina looked in the direction that Bette had indicated.  Angelica followed the music’s path and spotted the building.

“Mama T, hurry,” the four-year old commanded.

Tina looked around, puzzled.  She had expected to see a large octagonal building with a peaked roof and large openings along each side through which the moving carousel could be spotted.  Instead she saw a wooden building painted a brick red.  She quickly realized that the happy music was emanating from the small structure.

Bette and Angelica were thrilled, though the elder of the two was the more thrilled of the pair.  Tina was amused by their enthusiasm.

“You two get on line. I’ll get the tickets,” she explained.

Bette and her daughter took their places on a long line inside the structure that was positioned in snaking rows formed by white pickets.  Bette lifted Angelica so that she could watch the circling carousel.

    “Mama?  It’s different.”

“Boo, that’s the best things about it.”

Angelica’s openness to anything new was one of the most magnificent things she had brought into her mother’s life.

    1. Excellent chapter! I spent too much of my youth playing all those arcade games on too many beach boardwalks in the summer and your descriptions are perfect. Thanks for this story!

    2. I was grinning the entire time I read this. A parent reliving happy memories from childhood and sharing them with her child and wife. The other parent seeing something new, even after 12 years. Angie’s first experience of this type and having both her moms there. This reminds me of vacations at a small family beach in NC and going to Myrtle Beach for a night of rides and the arcade. Thanks for a great read tonight, Spumoni!

    3. This chapter was so much fun to read, as well as bringing back memories of going to the county fair. Always have had an inner ear problem and could not ride, would be deathly ill. But all the other things were there and we had a lot of fun. Enjoyed this chapter. PPS

    4. I wonder how much money they spent on the games. Chucky E. Cheese has games like that and I have had the pleasure of joining my nieces and nephews. I have never been to a beach boardwalk like that but I have been to a number of county fairs that evoke the same feeling. I have a mole that is driving me insane. Will you please send Angelica my way. She can whack the mole all she wants and I will not feel real bad for it.

    5. Now Spumoni, don’t make me have to call the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Moles! while I know arcades and such are primarily for children, adults can have fun too, and it was nice to see Bette enjoying playing the games she had played as a child. I kind of wished they would have let her just enjoy herself a bit…instead of having to always make it about Angelica. I think it would have been so cool to have been able to do those kinds of things, I too had a boring childhood! I have to tell you, Spumoni, esp in this chapter, there are moments when I forget I am reading an L word fic, I am wafted away to place and time…Your writing is that good. Hey I am offering my services ans an excellent proofreader if it would deliver you from being ensnared in endless rewriting!! Anytime.

    6. i remember those horse carousels, they were the best. that was a really fun experience for ange and nice that bette can still surprize tina. great writing.
