Angelica’s Fifth Fourth ~ Chapter Six

“That one, Mama!” Angelica pointed to buttermilk-colored horse on the outer ring.  Its large body flowed into a graceful but undersized neck and head.  Its rear legs were affixed to the platform.

Bette smiled, “That’s my favorite, too.”  Her mind began another of the visits to her past that had been happening ever since they had arrived on the island.  Bette remembered riding that same horse many times.

“Hey you.” Tina greeted as she returned.

“Mama, I’m riding that one.” Angelica stated with certainty as she pointed to the object of her riding desire.

“It is the prettiest.” Tina did not bother hedging, telling Angelica that they would try to get that horse. Tina knew that Bette would probably pull a box cutter on anyone who tried to grab any horse Angelica wanted.   She then shook her head at the image of Bette with a box cutter.

Angelica nodded her agreement with her Mama T’s assessment.

Tina noticed Bette’s distracted look, “Bette?”  Tina motioned, offering to hold Angelica.  Bette handed their daughter to her other mother.

As soon as she was relived of primary care-giving, Bette’s unrestricted mind traveled to the past.  When she was older, she had come to this carousel on her own but before that she had accompanied Kit or her older cousins.  Before that, Melvin had taken her when he would visit.  Earliest of all were her memories of riding the carousel with both of her parents.  Bette remembered being seated on the same horse that Angelica loved, her mother riding on the horse to her left, while her father held his daughter on the buttermilk horse that was far too large for such a little girl.  Bette remembered that she had felt nothing extraordinary—that both of her parents with her at the same time, with all of their love intermingling, was just how it would always be.  Bette glanced at her own family.  Boundless love filled her heart but she shivered in fear.

Tina spotted something in Bette’s demeanor, and she squeezed her arm, “Come back,” Tina whispered, coaxing Bette back from wherever she had gone.  They smiled at one anther.

“Mama, she got a ring,” Angelica pointed at the carousel where a little girl had grabbed a metal ring from one of the two wooden arms that extended towards  the inner ring or the outer ring of horses.  Tina had not noticed them before.

    1. Excellent chapter! I spent too much of my youth playing all those arcade games on too many beach boardwalks in the summer and your descriptions are perfect. Thanks for this story!

    2. I was grinning the entire time I read this. A parent reliving happy memories from childhood and sharing them with her child and wife. The other parent seeing something new, even after 12 years. Angie’s first experience of this type and having both her moms there. This reminds me of vacations at a small family beach in NC and going to Myrtle Beach for a night of rides and the arcade. Thanks for a great read tonight, Spumoni!

    3. This chapter was so much fun to read, as well as bringing back memories of going to the county fair. Always have had an inner ear problem and could not ride, would be deathly ill. But all the other things were there and we had a lot of fun. Enjoyed this chapter. PPS

    4. I wonder how much money they spent on the games. Chucky E. Cheese has games like that and I have had the pleasure of joining my nieces and nephews. I have never been to a beach boardwalk like that but I have been to a number of county fairs that evoke the same feeling. I have a mole that is driving me insane. Will you please send Angelica my way. She can whack the mole all she wants and I will not feel real bad for it.

    5. Now Spumoni, don’t make me have to call the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Moles! while I know arcades and such are primarily for children, adults can have fun too, and it was nice to see Bette enjoying playing the games she had played as a child. I kind of wished they would have let her just enjoy herself a bit…instead of having to always make it about Angelica. I think it would have been so cool to have been able to do those kinds of things, I too had a boring childhood! I have to tell you, Spumoni, esp in this chapter, there are moments when I forget I am reading an L word fic, I am wafted away to place and time…Your writing is that good. Hey I am offering my services ans an excellent proofreader if it would deliver you from being ensnared in endless rewriting!! Anytime.

    6. i remember those horse carousels, they were the best. that was a really fun experience for ange and nice that bette can still surprize tina. great writing.
