Art of Love – Chpt 13

When Peggy leaned back, she glanced over at me and winked. “So far,” she mouthed in my direction.

I smiled uncomfortably and took a deep breath.

“So, Barbara, how are things in Washington?” I asked, swirling a bite of veal in its sauce.

“Yes, Senator, do tell. Any interesting sex scandals being covered up on the Hill?” Peggy inquired.

“Mummy! Do you really think that’s appropriate dinner conversation?” Helena scolded her mother once again.

“Darling, we shouldn’t concern ourselves with suitability. The trick is to find an interesting topic, and then, to discuss it,” Peggy smiled around the table with a wave of her hand.

I’d now heard Peggy use the words ‘wizard’, ‘magic’, and ‘trick’. She’d also mentioned ‘art’, ‘sex’, and ‘London’. Something told me she was using the power of subliminal suggestion to bring the subject around to that which was at the forefront of her thoughts this evening. Or, perhaps, it was just that her choice of words was influenced by what was on her mind so prominently. In either case, my heart ached for Peggy, having been reminded of the loss of a familial artifact.

After a few moments of silence, Barbara spoke up.

“Perhaps we should discuss that to which we toasted,” the Senator suggested. “We’re all obviously art lovers here. And having now had the opportunity to peruse a bit of Helena’s work, it’s quite evident that her painting illustrates and embodies one aspect of the phrase: ‘art of love.’”

“What exactly do you mean, Senator?” Helena asked.

“Just that which we discussed upstairs. How apparent it was, at least to me, that your painting told the story of your love for Bette,” Barbara replied.

“These two were made for each other,” Peggy interjected, raising her napkin to dab at the corner of her mouth. “I pity the fool who would ever try to come between them. I’d have her teat in a wringer. And I’m not speaking udder nonsense.”

    “Mummy!”

The Senator laughed uncomfortably. “You are indeed a character, Mrs. Peabody.”

Peggy flashed Barbara a sinister smile.

“Yes, well,” Barbara continued uneasily. “At any rate, Bette,” the Senator addressed me, “Helena explained to me that your role in her work is twofold. You are her inspiration as well as her encourager.”

I set my fork down and reached under the table to take Helena’s hand which rested in her lap.

“You said that, Sweetheart?” I said, looking at Helena with an appreciative grin.

Helena turned her head to look in my eyes.

“Of course, Darling. You know that,” she said.

“Well, then, perhaps, Bette,” the Senator said, “you could persuade Helena to sell me a painting for my own collection. Just name your price.”

“I understand your collection is becoming legendary, Senator,” Peggy remarked.

Her use of the word ‘legendary’ did not escape my notice. She’d used it earlier in the evening to describe the depiction of the sculpture that had eluded her.

“Barbara, I’m not sure that Helena wants to sell an original and break up a body of work. We’ve discussed the offering of prints to charitably fund various arts projects,” I said, ignoring Peggy’s comment for the moment.

“That’s a rather noble choice. But I would simply have to have an original. I’d give anything in return for a piece,” Barbara replied, before sipping her wine.

Hmm. She’d ‘give anything’, she’d said. I suddenly had an idea. An idea, which, if it worked, would show Helena how much I loved her and would give Peggy a glimpse of how much she herself meant to me.

“What’s that you say, Senator? You’d give a piece for anything?” Peggy said, turning the Senator’s words around and staring point blank into her eyes.

‘Oh, God! Here we go!’ I thought to myself.

    1. i totally adore your writing… i enjoyed reading “a thin line” as well as this story but never left a comment to thank you … PPS… greetings from germany

    2. Interesting choice of words from the Senator, “I’d give anything in return for a piece.” A piece of what??? Art, Helena, Bette, both. Oh the beauty of the words. Excellent story Zhesse.

    3. Peggy used to watch “The A-Team”? Man, Bette channels Bogart and Peggy channels Mr. T, who would have believed it? I take it Peggy’s a breast woman with all her talk of teats and udders. That or she really likes dairy. I still think Peggy and the Senator have some potential. After all, each has the potential to (indirectly) give what the other wants. And as you pointed out zheese, it’s a thin line.

    4. OMG LMFAO….I can’t even type a comment because I’m laughing too hard. This was fantastic. Peggy is a trip – with 2 “pieces” of luggage. Oh, I am so looking forward to the next post.

    5. LOL…LOL…LOL…Oh my goodness. I should have popped some popcorn cause this is quite the show. Keep posting. I bet Bette will try to get Peggy’s piece from Barbara in exchange for one of Helena’s. I hope Helena goes along with the plan.

    6. Oh what a tease! I think Peggy and the senator will sleep with each other! Certainly seems like it! :D Loved your work, so glad that you’re able to come up with another original idea and make everything work so splendidly. Cool!

    7. Thanks for another great chapter zheese. So is Bette going to get that painting back for Peggy-sounds liek a fair trade to me, as long as Helena agrees to letting the senator have an original piece of her artwork. Can’t wait to read what happens next.

    8. The way you portray Peggy is just amazing, you are indeed a great writer. Wish I met Peggy back in 1974 before she was a hasbian, I would have never let her go.

    9. I cant stop laughing – Peggy has the Senator in her sites and is not going to stop jabbing at her until she lands the fatal blow. Helena and Bette should just sit back and let Peggy handle her business!! PPS!!
