    Beautiful Tuscany Chapter 9/ Waiting

It had been more than nine hours and Bette had still not woken up. Tina’s body ached from sleeping in the chair next to her bed. Maria and Anthony begged her to come home with them. She declined saying I’ll leave here when Bette wakes up. She knew as she said it, it may never happen. She tried fighting the thought, wanting only to think of the now. What was happening now was important, every minute counts. She recalled all of the time lost with her. And realized what she would give at this very moment to have it all back. She wished for someone to wave a magic wand, making it go away. But, there was no magic to use, no going back. This was real, her life and it was happening even if she didn’t want it to. It was just before dawn Tina walked over to the window and watched as the sun crested the horizon. The purple and orange rays swirled together giving the sky the appearance of a painting she and Bette and seen in a museum just days before the accident.

“Bette, she said. I’m not sure if you can hear me, she continued to watch the sky. The suns just coming up, it’s beautiful B. I wish you could see it. Do you remember the painting we saw in the museum? The sky is full of color just like that.

Tina hung her head and tears started falling again.

“I can’t believe this. I feel so helpless. What am I supposed to do?

She walked over to the bed and put her hand on Bette’s forehead.

“I’ll stay here with you as long as it takes. She turned around and went back to the window, all the while talking to Bette. Alice and Kit are coming they will be here soon. It will be so nice to see familiar faces, don’t you think so B?

Tina looked over at Bette who hadn’t made a sound. “I think it will be, she than said to herself.

Kit and Alice had gotten on the ten o’clock flight. They had called the other girls and every one waited with Thelma and Angelica to hear any news about Bette. Shane paced the floor, she wasn’t good at waiting. The anger and frustration was paramount and tempers flared.
