    Becoming Dana Fairbanks Chapter 4

“Uh..no..no… she left camp early. Family emergency or something I think,” the athlete said crouching down to untie and retie her shoelaces.

“Okay, well, I know you can beat her. Just stay focused like we talked about.”

The announcer called the two players playing in the girl’s finals to center court to shake hands and talk to the line judges.

Although, she walked to the court with her normal steady stride, Dana was shaking like a leaf inside. Her heart was pounding and she kept her eyes slightly downcast until she made it to the net and looked up into her competition’s beautiful eyes- the same eyes that had been in her dreams for a better part of the last six month.

She extended her hand, and felt a jolt as she shook hands with her former lover. God, she is so beautiful.

“Nice to meet you,” the girl said coldly, breaking their handshake quickly. The tone was one Dane didn’t recognize. All she could do was nod in reply.

As the judges went through the announcements they always made before a match, Dana’s mind was reeling, she couldn’t think a single coherent thought as every part of her being was telling her something different.

Announcements over, Dana got into position. She would be receiving first. One look at the other girl getting ready to serve, Dana knew she had already lost.

Her heart wasn’t in the match. It had been shattered by four little words.

The bus ride back to school was weird. On the whole, the team had done every well- winning mixed doubles, and boy’s singles and taking second in girl’s singles and doubles. Any other coach would have been please that his team had preformed well with still two weeks before the start of the regular season.

Coach Hall was furious though, that much everyone knew. How that would manifest itself, was anyone’s guess.

When they finally arrived back to school, everyone was relieved to disembark the bus grabbing their luggage and tennis gear.

All the players cringed when they heard Hall bellow, “Fairbanks. Go change into running clothes and be on the track in 15 minutes.”

    1. I felt bad for D but I think in the long run, it will make her a better athlete! Hey, no pain, no gain, right? She probably learned a lesson from this loss. I am positive that she will persevere ultimately. Still loving this story and am looking forward to your next post. Thank you.

    2. *looks like some people are up before me* ohhh what an a-hole, stupid coach! That girl i wonder…could it be…nah! Anyway anionayo another great post, i just feel so helpless because it’s like Dana is screaming and I cant help! Doing a very good job with the descriptions because my lungs were burning as i was reading the running part, i was shaking at the match-Excellent, cant wait to see what’s next.

    3. OMG girl, you’re updating so fast, not that I’m complaining or anything… I wish I could give Dana a hug and tell her that everything is gonna be fine… I wonder what would have happened if that jackass coach hadn’t interrupted them. Was Dana about to tell Jamie what’s going on? Anyway, I don’t think that she can keep it a secret from Jamie for too long. Please, don’t make Dana suffer too much, OK? Your writing is great! Looking forward to the next chapter!!!

    4. Amazing update, anionayo! Poor Dana! That had to be the worst day of her young life. My heart broke a bit along with her’s at the reaction of her opponent. The coach is a big jerk and possibly a sadist. These are still high school students — not professional athletes. Sorry. Pet peeve of mine. Being a teenager is tough enough without having this additional pressure. You are certainly stirring up the emotions here. I hope Dana gets a break here soon. Thanks so much!! Great story!!
