    Blizzard

There was rain. There was wind. There was cold. There was sunshine.

It was a mixture of all of those thing in addition to snow. Though the sunshine was mostly covered by dark grey clouds. The rain had already solidified and quickly turned to snow. The wind was so strong it could blow people away. And the cold had reached the limit of freezing.

Bette Porter sat on her bed, in the warm confines of the apartment. She looked out the glass doors which were icy. She could still see the raging blizzard. The wind was so loud it was deafening. The snow whooshed down so fast it was like watching giant blurs of white falling from the sky.

Bette’s lip quivered and she broke into hard sobs. Watching the snow had brought on a memory.

It was many years ago when she lived with her dad in Philly. She was 6 years old. She didn’t have a care in the world. She was frolicking through the thick snow with the knowledge that her mother would have a warm cup of hot chocolate with fresh batch of cookies waiting for her when she got back.

Kit was 20 years old. She had run out to the snow with her sister in excitement. She had just gotten her break and was about to release her first album. She went out to play with her little sister not only to celebrate but also with the knowledge that with her new career she wouldn’t be around anymore.

Of course she had no idea that she would spend years and years working around the clock using drugs and alcohol to keep her moving until she ended up a pregnant addict.

And of course young Bette enjoyed the attention she was receiving from her older sister. It was the last attention she would get for a long time, because in the next few days her mother would abandon her and Melvin would be wallowing in his own depression. Then David would arrive and when Melvin finally got the time to notice Bette again, she would have come out of the closet and he didn’t want to notice her anyways.

On this day, however, the last day of innocence for both of them, everything would just be about them. So Kit and Bette ran through the snow, making snow angels on the ground and building snowmen, which was not as easy as they thought it would be. Then they ended the grandiose day with a snow fight that left them basically like snow women at the end.

    1. So beautiful. I’ve really been enjoying all the chapters in this short series, they’ve all been so emotional and beautifully written. Thank you :)

    2. Beautiful but very sad as you said it would be. I’m just glad it wasn’t one of “our girls.” You scared the hell out of me when you said in last chapter that this one would be very sad. You are a great writer and I always look forward to your next story. I really admire that mind of yours. Thanks.
