Brokens Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 23)

    Chapter 23: My Own Bright

Catherine Opie turned out to be not only incredibly cool and nice, but had heard “so much” about me from Bette that she felt as though we were old friends already. This, and her assertion that Spencer D’Arcy could not have picked a better subject for The Broken Girl, made it a little difficult for me to dislike her, even though I wanted to cut in more than once and say, ‘Hey, don’t you think you could’ve not given Bette such a hard time these past two months or so? Because I do think I got the brunt of it.’

And as always, it was nice seeing Bette in her element, even past all the art talk when she was explaining to me what her first meeting with Catherine Opie had been like:

“We’re at this-God, I don’t even know where it was-”

“This bistro,” Catherine said, “somewhere out of the way.”

“Yeah,” Bette said, laughing. “Sorry about that. I sit down and the waiter puts this-this-”

“It was sort of like escargot,” Catherine explained to me, “and Bette was-”

I laughed. “I’m imagining that episode of I Love Lucy.”

Bette shook her head. “It wasn’t the food itself, it was that I had just sat down and I hadn’t even ordered yet-”

“Excuse me, Bette,” a voice said playfully. The three of us turned to acknowledge the hot guy I had noticed earlier, Eric, standing behind Bette, the blonde girl with him. Bette smiled.

“This is my girlfriend, Tina Kennard,” he said, gesturing to the blonde. “She heads up-”

Noticing that we were not at all included in the conversation, I turned back to Catherine Opie and said, “I think this is my last glass.” I held up my glass of wine. “I think I’ve had one too many.”

“You’ll have to have a drink at dinner, at least.”

“Ugh.” I shook my head. “I don’t think Bette will ever forgive me if I get drunk and start dancing on top of the table at her precious dinner party.”

    Catherine laughed. “You know, it’s-”

“Sorry, excuse me.” Eric was back, this time alone. Behind him, Bette was carrying on a conversation with his girlfriend, doing that thing she does where she uses her hands a lot and points at things. The girl seemed fascinated.

    1. ugh ALice Alice Alice…Your stories have the strangest affect on me. I laugh, worry, experience melancholy, hide my head behind my cushion, feel ashame and hurt all at the same time and all because of your wonderful writing..

    2. I didn’t know if I had to laugh or feel sad for Alice, it was a great and kind of unsettling chapter…
Please, update faster, I have a plane to catch soon and I wanna have the time to know what happens in the end!!
      xxx

    3. That was an amazing chapter – it seems… true. Your grip on these characters is incredible. Bette is arrogant but that is a part of the package, and people like that are often attractive even when you know you shouldn’t get taken in.

      Alice is wonderful. Period.

    4. So…when does the worm turn?

I am SO looking forward to the skid marks as Tina jets away with Bette’s heart. Bette has a hard fall coming, and I’ll be in the Peanut Gallery, cheering for every minute of it!!!!!!!

    5. She IS hot and she DOES have nice arms and more than that, she and her buddy Alice are so well written. I’m with you on every emotion, Rach, and you’re taking us through a LOT of emotions.

    6. I like your decision not to follow the standard avenue for the Tina and Bette meeting. Alice has such a torch burning for Bette. But I think that in the beginning, when they were in Bette’s office, I think that Bette really did like Alice more than she let on. She just has so many walls around her heart that she can’t just let go. At least, that’s the way it is with Alice…Tina on the otherhand.

    7. I feel so badly for Alice because I know what’s coming, but then again I know Bette and Tina are so much more. Poor Alice I love the girl and it’s going to hurt, but I can’t help but route for B/T !
