Brokens Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 23)

    Probably not.

Bette glanced back behind us at Tina again. She looked at me. “Yeah?”

    “Yeah.”

Bette chuckled. “You think everyone’s cute.”

I agreed with this as she turned the light on in her office and closed the door behind us. “I am in love with the world.”

Bette sat at her desk and turned her computer on. I took off my shoes and collapsed on her not-so-comfortable couch. It felt so much like old times that it ached a little. I flung my arm over my eyes. “Hey, Bette.”

    “Yeah?”

“Remember when we made out on this couch?” I moved my arm and tilted my head back, trying to see her reaction. She rolled her eyes at me.

    “No.”

“Must’ve been my imagination.” I relaxed again, closing my eyes.

“I should think.” There was a knock at the door. “Come in. Oh, right. Give it to Alice.”

I opened my eyes to see Bette’s assistant standing over me with a cup of coffee. “Oh, hey.” I sat up and accepted the cup, drinking gratefully.

“Okay,” Bette said without looking up from her computer. “That’s all, thanks.”

The assistant scurried out of the office. I rolled my eyes.

“Poor girl,” I said, eyeing Bette. “I know what working for you is like.”

Bette lifted her head to give me a look. She looked guilty for the briefest of seconds. “Um, hey,” she called, standing up and opening the office door. She poked her head out. “Um… why don’t you take the rest of the night off? Come to the dinner, if you want.” I didn’t hear her assistant’s response, but it must’ve been a positive one because Bette smiled and said, “Okay, good.” She closed the door, looking at me expectantly. “Happy?”

Yeah. That’s what I’ve wanted all along, Bette. For you to invite your assistant to your dinner party. Now that you’ve made my dreams come true, I can die a peaceful woman.

    But I just said, “Sure.”

“Listen.” Bette sat beside me. She thought for a moment and then scooted a little further away. “I wanted to talk to you and I didn’t want to do it in front of all those people, so that’s why I asked you in here.”

    1. ugh ALice Alice Alice…Your stories have the strangest affect on me. I laugh, worry, experience melancholy, hide my head behind my cushion, feel ashame and hurt all at the same time and all because of your wonderful writing..

    2. I didn’t know if I had to laugh or feel sad for Alice, it was a great and kind of unsettling chapter…
Please, update faster, I have a plane to catch soon and I wanna have the time to know what happens in the end!!
      xxx

    3. That was an amazing chapter – it seems… true. Your grip on these characters is incredible. Bette is arrogant but that is a part of the package, and people like that are often attractive even when you know you shouldn’t get taken in.

      Alice is wonderful. Period.

    4. So…when does the worm turn?

I am SO looking forward to the skid marks as Tina jets away with Bette’s heart. Bette has a hard fall coming, and I’ll be in the Peanut Gallery, cheering for every minute of it!!!!!!!

    5. She IS hot and she DOES have nice arms and more than that, she and her buddy Alice are so well written. I’m with you on every emotion, Rach, and you’re taking us through a LOT of emotions.

    6. I like your decision not to follow the standard avenue for the Tina and Bette meeting. Alice has such a torch burning for Bette. But I think that in the beginning, when they were in Bette’s office, I think that Bette really did like Alice more than she let on. She just has so many walls around her heart that she can’t just let go. At least, that’s the way it is with Alice…Tina on the otherhand.

    7. I feel so badly for Alice because I know what’s coming, but then again I know Bette and Tina are so much more. Poor Alice I love the girl and it’s going to hurt, but I can’t help but route for B/T !
