Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)
When the family arrived at Rockefeller Center for their dinner seating at the Rainbow Room, Dana gaped at the floor indicated by the elevator button that they pressed. She felt the acceleration and her stomach had just begun to signal its displeasure when the elevator halted and its doors opened into the restaurant’s foyer.
Dana could tell that it was a special place though she would not been able to articulate what was thrilling. They were led to a table along windows and the entire family stared at the city views. The restaurant was serving a special Thanksgiving dinner with entertainment geared to children. The large dance floor, accustomed to waltzes and two-steps, had Native Americans demonstrating tribal dances and teaching them to any children who would join them. Howie was the first out of his seat. Dana was tempted but she did not see any of the other girls her age joining the dance, so she didn’t. Children had a choice of Indian headdresses or Pilgrim hats or bonnets. Dana first surveyed the other teen girls in the room and, thrilled with the results, accepted a bonnet and wore it throughout the rest of their meal.
Rudimentary dance lessons were given to children. Howie’s creative attempts to blend the newly learned Native American steps with Fred Astaire style, proved challenging to the instructors.
While the Fairbanks ate dinner, clouds had blown in from the west and the view from the windows was blotted out. In its place, though, were hills and valleys of white clouds that rolled slowly past the windows. Dana felt cut off from the rest of the world and thought it magical.
The dance floor opened, and Irwin asked his daughter to dance. Sharon reminded Dana to remove her pilgrim bonnet when she left the table. Father and daughter circled the floor, the father thrilled to watch his growing daughter and the daughter convinced that she had the prettiest dress and the handsomest father in the room.
At a point that no one remembered later, a photographer appeared to take the family photo. Dana took that family photo with her when she went to her first tennis camp and on every trip away from home thereafter.

nothing to be embarrassed about, holidays are one big blur to me right now anyway…great update
What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.
whoa! u have parades at Thanksgiving? Such humor, pathos and detail. magnificent. Happy holidays.
What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.
wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!
I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C
”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D
