Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

    @@@@@@@

Lenore had spent all of Thanksgiving in the apartment until she left for that evening’s performance.  She found it amusing that her daughter still hid in her brother’s room.  Lenore enjoyed torturing the girl and she repeatedly walked past the bedroom door, muttering about Swiss boarding schools and nunneries and McLean’s Hospital.  It wasn’t until she was leaving for that evening’s performance that she gave Alice a hint that a truce was a possibility.

"Darling, we will have a late dinner when I return," Lenore projected done the hallway to Alice’s hideaway.

Alice cracked the bedroom door and when she heard Lenore slam the front door as she left, she burst from her dungeon, "Freedom!"

She raced to the television and spent the afternoon using the remote control to switch from one football game to another, keeping track of the status of her wagers with the night doorman, the day elevator attendant, and her brother.  The outlook was bleak.

Russ had located a taxi and it slowly traveled through traffic.  The driver was unfamiliar with the City’s rituals and had driven them right into where the parade ended.  Russ and the driver argued about whether the driver should shut off the waiting time on the meter.  Tina, though, was mesmerized by the marching bands, floats, and balloons at the staging area at the end of the parade.  She saw Big Bird with a dragging leg and wondered what had happened.

To Tina, the entire city looked crowded and grimy.  As they got closer to her uncle’s apartment, it grew more and more crowded and grimier. When the cab pulled in front of her uncle’s apartment building, she hid her shock and she continued to do so as they climbed the stairs and entered the apartment.  She had had a picture in her head of her uncle’s glamorous life in New York and there was a significant disconnect with reality.

The apartment was beautifully decorated, though there were unpacked moving boxes crowding the corners.

"Sorry about the boxes.  I haven’t had a chance to unpack and it would be a waste of time since I plan to move soon."

"That makes sense, Uncle Russ," Tina lied.

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
