    Destiny (2)

Helena tried her best to sneak into the theatre without disturbing the beautiful choral music that was playing. The instrumentalists were resting, waiting for their next cue as the choir sang. It wasn’t nearly loud enough to muffle the sound of the door opening and closing and everyone in the theatre turned to look at her.

Tina shook her head slightly and Alice looked angry. Bette, who had saved a seat for her, gave her a sympathetic smile. Helena raised the dandelions as sort of a peace offering and Bette smacked her forehead with her hand.

"I’m sorry I’m late," Helena said.

"It would have been forgivable if you would have brought the right flowers," Bette said.

Helena looked down at the dandelions then up at Bette. "Oh no, it’s not…"

    "Pink roses, Helena. Pink roses!"

    "Oh bloody hell…"

"Shhhh!" A pesky old woman hissed from in front of them.

The violins joined in with the chorus playing in perfect intonation and rhythm. Every single violinist, cellist, and bassist played absolutely professionally. Bette watched in awe as Tina’s fingers moved gracefully and efficiently across the fret of the violin, shaking slightly to make each note vibrate. Her other hand moved a bit slower as she maneuvered the bow in slow, languid movements.

The woodwinds joined the piece. First the flutes played a high pitched trill, then the saxophones, clarinets, bass clarinets, bassoons, and oboes joined in. Helena watched Alice intently as her fingers pressed the keys of the black, slender instrument. Her body shifted with the expression of the music. Her eyes closed with every beautiful phrase then opened again to look at the printed notes in front of her.

The timpani joined in with an uproarious rumble as the brass slipped in with a low crescendo with one single muted trumpet playing a jazzy melody an octave higher than all the other trumpets. The choir sung like angels a beautiful chord in double forte as the symphony did a crescendo with them until the entire ensemble was holding the last note of the song which was a beautiful flourishing note that echoed off the walls and raised the hairs of the 50,000 people sitting in the theatre.

The conductor cut them off together with a single movement and the theatre roared with applause. Bette hooted and cheered loudly with happy tears in her eyes as she stood with the rest of the crowd for a standing ovation. Helena followed suit clapping wildly and cheering Alice’s name.
