    Hello sex. I am loneliness.

The bar was dark, of course that is usually the case isn’t it? It was a long way from the dive I had just come from. Well, maybe not but at least it didn’t smell of piss. That is the one thing you can say about women’s bars, it is very seldom that someone feels the need to urinate in a corner. I was tired and probably should have been at home in bed. Yet here I was. I didn’t think I could go home to the empty apartment. After five years you think I could have learned to deal with the quite stillness. For the most part I had, it was just days like this that I couldn’t handle it.

So I was sitting there drink in hand when she walked in. I could have sworn that the sound in the room dropped a few decibels. I must admit that I had a brief fantasy about touching her. Her caramel skin looked soft to the touch, even from across the bar. I, however, didn’t let the titillating thought move me from my stool. After all that was not why I was there. I was just there for a brief drink before bed. The say you aren’t supposed to drink alone and you can’t be alone in a room full of women. I had chosen this place because I knew I wouldn’t run into anyone I knew. My friends didn’t hang out in places like this. I could tell in an instant that neither did she.

She had ordered a drink and moved to one of the few open tables. She sat down but not before a mild look of disgust flitted across her face. Yep, that is how I felt about the place too. I watched her take a long slow gulp of her clear poison before she surveyed the occupants of the bar. Her gaze was nothing short of predatory. I turned back to my drink, not wanting to see her pick up someone that was beneath her, which in my opinion was everyone in the bar.

I smelled her expensive perfume before I saw her. I could feel the charge that her nearness sent through my skin. Fuck, I won’t be able to say no. Maybe she just wants another drink. Even as the thought ran through my head I knew it was a lie. I could feel her willing me to look at her. No, it was a dare. I could never turn down a dare.

    1. Thank you for posting this, it was amazing from the very first word to the last. So many feelings and emotions. As for the erotic part of the story, these lines were the best: “I slid out of the car. I didn’t look to see if she was following me. I got the confirmation I needed as her heels hit the wood of the stairs.” It somehow sounds very sexy, it must be the atmosphere you created with your writing. Once again, thanks for this brilliant story.

    2. Your command of words just takes my breath away. I have never read anything so beautifully written yet heartbreaking at the same time. You my friend are a wonderful writer.

    3. That was achingly sad, yet it was also hopeful…there really are good people out there in the world, who every once in a while show up at just the right time, giving us just what we need. Thank you for this…beautiful.

    4. So V, how’d you get so wounded and jaded. I quite liked the cop. I wish NYC could recruit a few more professors into their ranks, it would do a world of good. I remember seeing one corner a bad guy in Times Square once (back when it was pimpolicious). As a result of the cop adopting the classic “come to papa” pose, like the bad guy was going to jump into his arms, he took several shoots to the jaw. It was kind of like watching Mrs. Peel in The Avengers and thinking “kick him in the nuts, he’s wide open for it”. Oh well, law enforcement 101.

    5. R, NC17? I dunno, but that’s one of the most poetic R/NC17’s I’ve ever read. The atmosphere was palpable. With all the sadness of episode 9 and what’s to come in the remaining season, this rendition of the main character(s) and their struggles (especially Bette here) is a welcome respite. Look forward to the next one.
