    I Forgot To Breathe (5)

“So what have you got for me today, group 6?” Mrs. Buckley said in an annoyed tone looking at us harshly.

We looked amongst each other as Tim stood up with the paper in hand. “Um, well to decipher what are the causes of the problems in the world, we plan to explore racial, social, and religious differences, as well as investigate the real causes of the world wars.”

Mrs. Buckley didn’t look impressed. She just narrowed her eyes and said, “so you guys think your so important you caused the world wars?”

“Not us,” Alice defended, “just everyone around the world in general.”

“You mean the Jews and the blacks then?” Mrs. Buckley snarled looking at me, and Tasha, and Jenny.

“Not only us,” Tasha snapped. I could feel her temper rising.

“Oh Ms. Williams,” Mrs. Buckley said, “don’t presume to think that you niggers are actually important in the world, you just wanna give yourself importance, but in all honesty you are all worthless trash.”

“What the…” Tasha started angrily but Carmen grabbed her arm firmly as well as me.

“She’s looking for any excuse to get us expelled, Tash,” Carmen said.

Tasha glared daggers at her and I stood up to the defense calmly, “and couldn’t the same be said about white people?”

“What the fuck did you say?” Mrs. Buckley snapped angrily as the rest of the classmates gave me death glares. My own group looked intrigued by my comment in particular Tina who was looking at me expectantly.

“Well, the Germans are white aren’t they?” I said smartly noticing a smile on Jenny’s face, “did they not call themselves the ‘superior race’ and started eliminating Jews, and gypsies, and homosexuals? I think that qualifies as giving themselves too much importance.”

“But we’re not Germans,” Mrs. Buckley snapped.

“But you’re white, and all white people are the same aren’t they?” I said with a wide grin.

I saw my group mates smiling at my words, and Tasha visibly calmed down. The rest of my classmates looked at Mrs. Buckley in surprise, waiting for a denial.

Mrs. Buckley just looked at me flabbergasted and I smirked challengingly. If she was gonna be a racist, I was gonna make her feel real bad about it.
