I Forgot To Breathe (5)
“No, not all white people are the same,” Mrs. Buckley said knowing what I would say next.
“So then how can you call all black people trash? We’re not all the same,” I said.
Mrs. Buckley grit her teeth angrily and I smiled victoriously. She quickly changed the subject into the lesson and I sat down receiving the praise from the group.
“Nice, Bette,” Tasha said.
“I love when you do that,” Carmen said smiling.
“You should do our presentation,” Alice said with a giggle.
“Well done, Bette,” Helena praised looking up from her notebook.
“You’re so brave,” Dana said grinning admiringly.
“Good example, I can relate,” Jenny said.
“I couldn’t have done it better myself,” Shane said.
“Her face was priceless,” Tim said chuckling.
Tina grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes with a small smile, “you are amazing.”
“Aww,” Alice teased.
“Shut up, Al,” Helena said hitting her arm.
“What it’s just cute,” Alice murmured.
After Mrs. Buckley finished her lecture, we had the rest of the time available to talk about our topics.
“So what did you discover?” Alice said taking the lead.
“Well, we have newspaper articles, speeches, and testimonials,” Tim said taking out a manila folder.
“We know everything about the wars,” Jenny added.
“And it all has to do with discrimination,” Shane said.
“Money adds in to the picture too,” Carmen said giving Shane a look that no one else noticed, but Tasha and I knew Carmen too well.
“Well, we went to Jenny’s church, then mine,” Dana said.
“They were nicer at Jenny’s church,” Alice said, “you should have seen those Catholics at Dana’s church when I told them I was an atheist.”
“I imagine they wanted to kill you for that,” Tina said laughing.
“They almost mauled her, but I managed to get her out,” Tasha said meeting eyes with Alice then turned away with a sad sigh. I understood what that meant. That’s when it must have happened. She must have helped Alice escape and then they ended out sleeping together that night.
“I stayed behind to calm everyone down, it was horrible,” Dana said. Yep that’s definitely when it happened.
“So,” Jenny said with an amused smile, “are you saying that Catholics are worse than Jews?”

Ah dang! I shouldn’t ignoring your warning about the cliffy! Now I am so curious to know what will Bette do…. PPS?! thanks! :-D
Omg the gang had fallen apart!.. And BnT are still not in relationship? Henry is still in the pic?..Wth? Yeah Bette do as you must .. claim what is yours!… Good rebuttal…”Well, the Germans are white aren’t they?” I said smartly noticing a smile on Jenny’s face, “did they not call themselves the ‘superior race’ and started eliminating Jews, and gypsies, and homosexuals? I think that qualifies as giving themselves too much importance.””But we’re not Germans,” Mrs. Buckley snapped.”But you’re white, and all white people are the same aren’t they?” I said with a wide grin.I saw my group mates smiling at my words, and Tasha visibly calmed down. The rest of my classmates looked at Mrs. Buckley in surprise, waiting for a denial.Mrs. Buckley just looked at me flabbergasted and I smirked challengingly. If she was gonna be a racist, I was gonna make her feel real bad about it.”No, not all white people are the same,” Mrs. Buckley said knowing what I would say next.”So then how can you call all black people trash? We’re not all the same,” I said. Loved how good, Bette to defend them.
