I just Wanted To Know Why You Were Sad

She precedes Shane along the hallway, enters the living room and sits down on the couch. She grabs the remote and turns off the TV. Then, she pats on the empty place beside her, but Shane doesn’t look up. With her head still bowed, she reaches for the armchair across the coffee table and plops down.

Then she leans forward, resting her elbows on her knees and clasping her hands together, and finally looks up. Her eyes are green. They look tired.

“Tell me”, Carmen says, and her voice sounds calm, “What do you wanna know?”.

    Shane exhales.

“I just wanted to know… why you looked so sad in that video”, she murmurs, huskily.

“You came all the way over here to ask me why I was sad in Bette and Tina’s video?”, Carmen’s voice reaches a slightly higher pitch, and her eyes can’t help but look sarcastic.

    Shane looks down.

    “Yeah”, she whispers, “Precisely”.

    “Why?”.

Carmen is sincerely curious. She plays with a strand of her long hair, her elbow resting on the arm of the couch, her legs crossed casually.

“Because. I can ask, can’t I?”, Shane retorts.

    “Don’t get defensive”, Carmen mumbles.

    “Don’t get mad, then”.

    Carmen’s eyes widen.

“What?”, she chuckles in disbelief, “I’m not mad! What the fuck are you talking about?”.

Shane places her palms on her knees, smoothing down her jeans. She seems on the verge of exhaustion.

“Tell me why you looked so sad in that video”, she repeats. And then, glancing up: “Please”.

“It was a bad day”, Carmen says, flatly.

    “Why?”.

    “I don’t remember”.

Shane stares at her, pursing her lips.

“Carmen…”, she mumbles in a warning tone.

    Carmen grimaces.

“You aren’t going to give in, are you?”, she moans.

    “No”.

    Carmen swallows.

“I didn’t look sad. I was. I was sad”, she states then, as calmly as she can, “When Jenny called me, she told me that you two were together”.

Shane shifts on the armchair, in discomfort, and clears her throat.

“I couldn’t believe it. Now, you’re confirming that she was being honest”.

“We’re not together anymore”, Shane replies, quietly.
