I Need My Best Friend – Part 17
Chapter Seventeen
Without much conversation they had decided to go inside for dinner. Bette started a fire while Tina started dinner. Bette quietly entered the kitchen and started helping, occasionally glancing at Tina, wanting to say something, wondering if it would be safer to just keep quiet. Tina knew that look that posture, Bette struggling with what she wanted to say. She just hoped Bette wasn’t going to try to bring up their earlier conversation; she just wasn’t up for it.
They had eaten, quietly, in front of the fireplace only sharing small talk about the girls or what time they should leave the next morning.
As Tina started to clear their dishes Bette touched her arm, ‘I’ll do that, you relax.’
‘Thanks.’
‘It’s the least I can do; you took care of all the details for this weekend. Did I thank you for that?’
‘Yes, more than once and you’re welcome.’
‘I’ll be right back.’
Tina’s mind wandered as she sat staring at the fire. She thought of all the changes they had undergone and wondered if they were still right for each other. Had they ever been right for each other? In the beginning she never doubted that she was the one, the only one, who could truly make Bette happy. Well that hadn’t exactly held true now had it! What was it about Candace? No, I’m not thinking about her. Bette isn’t seeing her anymore and I really don’t believe this was about Candace. This is about us. She wasn’t sure she was still the one to make Bette happy. Bette hated to lose, was she trying to hold on just because she didn’t want to give up? Had Bette really paid attention to who Tina had become, especially at the end, and had she realized the changes she had made for herself? What was going to happen when every moment wasn’t filled with the push and pull from the turmoil they found themselves in? What happens when Bette realizes she has overcome most of things that had her spiraling out of control and Tina was not the person she thought she was?
Bette had come back into the room just as Tina wiped away the tears that were streaming down her cheeks. She knew this was difficult for Tina and wished she could do something. All she felt she had the right to do was leave the room and give Tina a few more minutes to herself.
