Giving Up Or Giving In – Part 1

    Chapter One

Tina’s attorney insisted Bette get up off the floor and stop trying to run things.  As she started to stand her fingertips brushed across Tina’s stomach, she knew, instantly.  Tina saw it, that flash of pure joy reflected in Bette’s eyes that rapidly turned to sorrow.  She wanted to reach out to Bette, but before she could gather her thoughts Bette was walking away.

Bette looked at her attorney, ‘Give her everything she wants, no more arguing.’

As she gathered her things her attorney started to protest, she held up her hand, ‘No more arguing, give her whatever she wants and make sure there is a provision for child support.  I would like the opportunity to know this child but you are not to make that a condition of support.  Whether I see this child or not is totally up to Tina.  Just draw up the papers and I’ll sign them.’ And with that, she was gone.

Tina started to stand, ‘I need to talk to Bette.’

‘That can wait; we should get this done now before she changes her mind.’

    ‘Bette Porter’s office.’

‘James this is Bette I won’t be in for a few days.  You can reach me at home or on my cell if you have to, but I really don’t want to be bothered.  Tell Franklin I have a family emergency and will be out of town for a few days.’

‘I take it things didn’t go well.’

‘I don’t think they could have gone any worse.  I’ll see you in a few days.’

    Later that night

Bette had been walking through the house all afternoon remembering everything that had happened there, good and bad.  She remembered more good than bad, but was sure all Tina remembered was the way things ended.  How did she let things get so messed up?  All she wanted was Tina and their baby and as far as she was concerned, it is their baby.  She thought about that last night and wondered if Tina already knew she was pregnant, she had to at least know there was a possibility.  Something else to feel guilty about!
