    Episode – Loneliest Number
    Just one little touch could have changed so much.

     

    ‘Yes, I am.  I’m more in love with you now than the day we had our commitment ceremony.’

     

    ‘Well then, I’ll give you a choice.  You can take these papers, sign them and we can both move on.  I will never keep your daughter from you, so you don’t have to be concerned about that.’

     

    ‘Or?’

     

    ‘I’m not sure I can ever trust you enough to commit to you again, but I’m willing to take the next few months and see what happens.’

     

    ‘I want another chance with you, for us, our family.’

     

    ‘There is a condition, a big one.’

     

    ‘Anything.’

     

    ‘If I don’t feel like we are making enough progress by the time the baby is born you have to promise to sign the papers and let me go.  You have to accept my decision.  I don’t want to go through this after the baby is born.  I don’t want her to go through her parents break up.  If I’m going to be a single parent I need to know sooner rather than later.  Agreed?’

     

    ‘So you’re giving me the next few months to make you fall in love with me again?’

     

    ‘No Bette, I’m still in love with you, we have the next few months to try to rebuild the trust we’ve lost.  But the first thing, the most important thing to me right now, is to make sure we can at least give our daughter two parents who can be in the same room without creating tension.  If we can’t find our way back to each other I hope we can at least reach a common ground that will allow us to give her a loving family.  I never want her to feel torn between the two of us.’

     

    ‘I’ll agree to anything you want as long as you give me another chance.  Not that I’m in any position to make requests, but there are a few things I’d like.’

     

    ‘Such as?’

     

    ‘I’d like to make some changes to the way we have our finances set up so things are less one sided.  That way you won’t have to worry about any of this if it does become necessary.’

     

    ‘All right, we’ll sit down in the next few weeks and decide what to do.’

     

    ‘If you want I’ll sign the papers and you can hold onto them until then.’

     

    ‘No, I don’t want these papers as a reminder even for a few weeks.  If we are going to try to start over I want it to be a clean start.’

     

    ‘What happens now?’

    2. Woohoo! I get to leave the first comment! I better hurry up and post. That was so great!! I love your take on Bette; her resignation is so out of character it actually works. This is very intriguing…indeed, “What happens now?” Please keep going, your dialogue and tempo are excellent. :)
