    I Wish CH 27

Tina was surprised. More than surprised actually. It led to her next question.

"Why did you sell the house then?"

"Why did you buy the house?"

"Oh, um, well, it’s in a good neighborhood, I love the pool, and the garden. Um, it was a decent price, and well, it was what Angelica knew as home, for most of her short life anyway."

Looking at Tina, Bette knew that there was more she wasn’t being told.

    "And?"

Tina turned a bright pink, but know she had to be honest with Bette.

"And, because it was….it was filled with memories. It was filled with familiarity, and it was filled with…you. Your smell, your laugh, your love. It had all of the you, I knew I’d never have again. It has all of our memories within it’s walls, and I wanted to be able to live in those memories. Keep them alive, make sure I always remembered them, and share them with our daughter. I bought it because, it was the only place that ever felt like home to me. I missed it when I wasn’t there, and I wanted, no, I needed to have all of that to hold onto, because I knew I had lost you, and that it was all I would ever have of you again."

Bette watched as the tears slid unnoticed down Tina’s soft skin. They matched the ones creeping down Bette’s face. She slid over closer to Tina, and tentatively put her arm around her. When she felt no resistance, she pulled her gently into her embrace and held her tightly as their tears fell in tandem.

"Those were all the reasons I sold it. I couldn’t bare to be surrounded by you all of the time. When everything happened, and I lost you, I couldn’t function. I couldn’t breathe in the house for all of the memories choking me, pressing me deeper into my pain. I started to hate it there. I couldn’t go into any room and not be bombarded by visions of you smiling, and laughing, or of us together. It was killing me everyday. I thought I would go crazy. So on a whim, I put it up for sale, and then I went to New York to hide from all the memories. To make them go away. When Kit called me and told me there was an offer on the house, I got sick. I was scared to let it go, but I was more terrified of not being able to. So I let it go. I let it go, and I have regretted it every single moment since then."

"Oh Bette, I am so sorry. I never should have taken it from you."

"You didn’t Tina. You didn’t take it from me, I gave it away. Regrettably, that is what I did."

    "So now what?"

    "What do you mean?"

"Well, what can we do? About this, the house I mean."

"What is there to do Tina? It’s done. It belongs to you. It’s your home, and it’s Angelica’s home. There is nothing to do."

"Well that can’t be. We have to do something. You need your home back."

"Tina. Are you listening to your self? You are not making much sense."

"Yes I am. You are not hearing me."

"Okay,…draw me picture here, because I truly am lost."

"Bette. Your home, is my home. It is Angelica’s home. Fuck. It is only a home when WE are in it. Otherwise it is just a house."

"Tina, are you saying I should move back to the house?"

"It’s your home Bette. It’s where we belong."
