If it makes you happy – Chapter 22

“I don’t want you to go.” Bette offered the simple declaration with such assuredness that Tina began to wonder if this was more than a spur of the moment thing. She pushed the thought from her mind as quickly as it had appeared, now was not the time to question the decisions they had agreed to.

“Want and need are very different things.” The blonde pointed out as she folded a winter coat of Angelica’s and dropped it into the box in front of her.

“I want and need you and Angie here with me, in our home.” Bette answered without missing a beat, “I want my family at home.”

“I believe that you want it, I’m just not convinced that it’s what you need right now.” Tina countered as she neatly folded another of her daughter’s t-shirts. She felt Bette’s hand grip her wrist as she moved to place the garment in the packing box.

“Tina, I’m completely capable of working out what I need and differentiating it from what I want.” Came Bette’s irritated response to which Tina offered no reply, instead she looked down at Bette’s hand wrapped around her wrist which Bette sheepishly released. Tina wasn’t interested in arguing over this, she hoped that Bette was simply reacting to the fact that she was finally moving out. “What about you?” Bette asked as she changed tack, “What do you want?”

Tina stopped her packing and turned to face her girlfriend. She quickly realised that her focus had been on whatever Bette needed from her, she hadn’t really taken the time to consider what she would want if she were the one calling the shots.

“What I want” Tina paused as she struggled to find words that would convey the feelings in her heart, “Is to give you every reason to believe in us.”

“What difference does it make whether you move out or not?” Bette persisted.

“It gives you the time and space to process things without the pressure of me always being here.” Tina countered simply, she was determined to carry out their agreed plan.

“I like you being here.” Bette sighed, in truth she couldn’t help but be a little disappointed that Tina didn’t seem to find her change of heart appealing.

    1. well, tina had changed and even though i’d love for her to stay, i think it’s better for them to start from the scratch…hopefully they both can trust each other that they won’t see anybody else

    2. Do you realize how special your writing is? I’m reminded of this after every chapter and try to wait patiently in between. Hoping for more…thank you.

    3. I can understand both Bette and Tina’s thinking. Bette for wanting to keep Tina there and for Tina wanting to give Bette all the space she needs to make the right decision for her.

    4. I am sad for Bette that Tina and Angelica are moving out, but I am sure that going slow is better than rushing in blind. It is time that Bette and Tina really worked through things and took their time to rebuild. Fantastic chapter!

    5. What is Bette thinking? I feel like she only wants Tina because she is the default choice after Abby dumped her. Would she be screwing someone else while seeing Tina if she hadn’t been dumped? I guess that is what bothers me just because no matter when mistakes Tina made in the past that is just totally disrespectful and awful. I feel like she is just trying to force Tina’s hand because she is the only one still there. Hope more is explained next time.

    6. Good for Tina in calling Bette on her crap that it was Abby who dumped her and how is it that Tina can be considered her girlfriend at this stage, she was just with Abby as her girlfriend and Tina as the ex-wife.
