“I think Bette is saying that she thinks the beauty is incomparable to the art on the walls. But that she hopes the lack of parallel does not keep the lines that separate she and the woman in her sight from converging.” Alice looked at Bette, who was still awestruck. Then she looked at Johnathan. “Or something like that. Get it?”

Johnathan looked in the direction of Bette’s gaze, and he too was overcome with the sparkling woman from whom Bette couldn’t take her eyes.

“Yes,” he mumbled, as he too stared. “I get it.”

“Yeah. Thought so,” Alice retorted, as she observed Bette in her daze and had no reason to wonder why Bette’s pose was like a statue, wineglass suspended in midair.

“Alice, wine has always been potent, but never, for me, such as this,” Bette offered. She took a sip from her tasting glass. “Meritage. American Bordeaux. A beautiful blend.”

    Chapter 2

Alice studied her wine glass and glanced at her tasting notes before taking another sip.

“Gee, Bette, maybe I should just go straight from the first wine on the list to the one you’re tasting. Which one is it?” Alice joked, peering over at Johnathan with a smile before poking Bette in the ribs again.

“Hmm?” Bette replied. “Oh, it’s number five. The Meritage from Sonoma,” she answered Alice, pointing to the wine description on Alice’s program with her index finger.

“Why don’t ya go introduce yourself, Miss Wine Maven?” Alice nodded in the direction of the attractive, dark-haired woman who had unwittingly seduced Bette’s attention.

“I’m about to, Alice. I’m about to,” Bette admitted, with a conciliatory grin.

Looking up at Johnathan and back to Alice, Bette finally remembered her manners.

“Alice, do you know Johnathan? Johnathan Trevor, please meet Alice Pieszecki, a dear friend of mine. You two may find quite a bit in common. Johnathan is a writer, a critic for the Times, Alice. Alice is an up and coming journalist for L.A. Magazine, Johnathan,” Bette introduced the two.

“Oh, hey! You’re a writer! How cool is that?” Alice said, shoving Johnathan’s shoulder with her hand. “So whaddaya criticize, J.T.?”

Bette smiled at Alice’s familiar ways and was amused. Laughing lightly, Johnathan seemed intrigued, as well as unflapped, with Alice’s casual, quirky demeanor.

    1. LOL Tease!! Reminds of some other author who did that same kind of teasing in a story where Tina was catching up with Bette after 15 years and the waiter interrupted them!! LOL Thanks!

    2. Dying to know who the mystery woman is, and whomever was announcing the money is in soooooooooooooooooooo much trouble. First of all for interrupting, and secondly you never discuss money in the open,

    3. zheese, how could you leave us hanginh like this,,hahahaha. I sure did love how you had this mysterious woman give in detail the way she would wake up in the morning in the vineyard, a wnderful detail. Loved it Z….

    4. HEY Zheese the Tease, You are so brilliant at giving me some much information and then interrupting it so that the truth has yet to be revealled. I do want to know who this dark-haired temptress who has taken Bette’s attention is. I get the feeling that Alice and Johnathon will have lots to talk about which could prove interesting for Bette. This is an intriguing premise and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. Could the mystery woman be Helena??? Enquiring minds want to know. As always, I am on my toes awaiting your continuation. Please make it soon. Many thanks for this mysterious and magical melodrama. Your Loyal Fan.

    5. Oh pluck me! You left us hanging on the vine and now we’re berry upset. Thanks and right back at you: a votre sante. So, are the writer-types going to live up to stereotypes and go well beyond ‘tasting’ and drink themselves blind? Or does Johnathan have enough sense for them both?

    6. Who’s the fucking fool who interrupted these women!? Hmmm? Point ’em out and I’ll handle them…lol…seriously, this is wonderful. I love the Johnathan and Alice bit…match made in freaking loony bin heaven. PPS

    7. Zheese, although I think I have a pretty good idea who this spectacular brunette might be, this new story of yours has me very intrigued. And I must say this is all quite promising. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Zheese. This is great.
