In Vino Veritas – Chpt 2

    “Well, my dear, I …”

Interrupting Johnathan, Bette formally requested her dismissal. “Will you two please excuse me? There’s someone I’d like to introduce myself to,” Bette said, turning to leave, comfortable that Alice and Johnathan, despite their social differences, were sure to get along.

“Yeah, yeah! Go meet Venus in Blue Jeans,” Alice waved her off.

Johnathan guffawed at Alice’s reference to the sixties’ golden oldie as Bette walked away.

“Heh heh! Did ya like that, J.T.?” Alice inquired before beginning to sing the song. “She‘s Venus in Blue Jeans…Mona Lisa with a ponytail. She’s a walkin’ talkin’ work of art…”

Johnathan finished the verse, “She’s the girl who stole my heart.”

Alice and Johnathan giggled uncontrollably as they headed to the tasting table for another sample of wine. And Bette pretended to ignore their teasing, but secretly smiled at the friendship that seemed to be quickly working between the unlikely pair. She resolutely swayed toward the svelte seductress across the room.

    *************

When she reached the object of her attention, Bette stood quietly next to her with her eyes staring forward at the painting on exhibit in the hall. Secretly, though, Bette was perusing the lovely lady to her side with her peripheral vision.

Finally she spoke. After a sip of wine.

“Breathtaking, isn’t it?” Bette said quietly.

The woman sighed. “Indeed. I’ve been there before. And this painting makes me feel as if I’ve re-awakened one beautiful morning in France and slipped out into the rows filled with leaves dripping with dew.”

Bette turned to look at her, silently wishing she’d tell her more.

The woman continued. Staring at the painting. And answering Bette’s unspoken request. “It’s morning. And the berries are plump in early September. I can feel myself breathe in the cool dawn air. The clusters hang ripe, as if begging to be touched and plucked. Instead of hearing music, I feel as if I’m watching it. Nature is reaching a crescendo. It’s a moment that one longs to reach out, and taste, and hear, and smell with every fiber of their being.”

Listening intently, entranced, Bette could feel her chest inhale and exhale with each word the woman spoke. She could feel herself losing her equilibrium. What she had left.

    The woman turned to her.

    Their eyes met. And held.

Bette struggled to find herself and to speak.

“You sound as if you know your way around a vineyard,” Bette said softly, with a smile, and involuntarily reaching out her hand to the woman. Because she so much wanted to touch her. “Hi, I’m Bette Porter. I’m the Director of the CAC…”

“Yes, I gathered as much from seeing you mill about earlier. It’s very nice to meet you. I’m …”

“Ms. Porter! Ms. Porter!” a voice interrupted. “I thought you’d like to know. We’ve just reached our goal. $100,000! Can you believe it? $100,000!”

    1. LOL Tease!! Reminds of some other author who did that same kind of teasing in a story where Tina was catching up with Bette after 15 years and the waiter interrupted them!! LOL Thanks!

    2. Dying to know who the mystery woman is, and whomever was announcing the money is in soooooooooooooooooooo much trouble. First of all for interrupting, and secondly you never discuss money in the open,

    3. zheese, how could you leave us hanginh like this,,hahahaha. I sure did love how you had this mysterious woman give in detail the way she would wake up in the morning in the vineyard, a wnderful detail. Loved it Z….

    4. HEY Zheese the Tease, You are so brilliant at giving me some much information and then interrupting it so that the truth has yet to be revealled. I do want to know who this dark-haired temptress who has taken Bette’s attention is. I get the feeling that Alice and Johnathon will have lots to talk about which could prove interesting for Bette. This is an intriguing premise and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. Could the mystery woman be Helena??? Enquiring minds want to know. As always, I am on my toes awaiting your continuation. Please make it soon. Many thanks for this mysterious and magical melodrama. Your Loyal Fan.

    5. Oh pluck me! You left us hanging on the vine and now we’re berry upset. Thanks and right back at you: a votre sante. So, are the writer-types going to live up to stereotypes and go well beyond ‘tasting’ and drink themselves blind? Or does Johnathan have enough sense for them both?

    6. Who’s the fucking fool who interrupted these women!? Hmmm? Point ’em out and I’ll handle them…lol…seriously, this is wonderful. I love the Johnathan and Alice bit…match made in freaking loony bin heaven. PPS

    7. Zheese, although I think I have a pretty good idea who this spectacular brunette might be, this new story of yours has me very intrigued. And I must say this is all quite promising. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Zheese. This is great.
