    “I thought maybe…”

     

    “There’s that word again.”

     

    “Maybe you could come over when you’re free.”

     

    Once again, Tina was reaching out to her. And, Bette thought, the fact that she’s at her own home means that there’s nowhere for her to run to. “I can be free in a little bit.”

     

    “But I thought the gallery would be open through the afternoon.”

     

    “Alice can handle it.”

     

    “Are you sure? I mean, I don’t want to mess things up for you.”

     

    “Tina, what’s the use of being the boss if I can’t leave early now and again.”

     

    “If you’re sure.”

     

    “I’m sure. I’ll see you in a little bit. Okay.”

     

    “Very okay,” Tina agreed.

     

    “Bye.”

     

    “Bye,” Tina whispered.

     

    Bette stayed on the line, not hanging up until she heard the phone click off on the other end.

     

    After taking a moment to think through her plan, Bette returned back to the reception area of the Gallery. “Hey Al, can you do me a favor?”

     

    “Is it the kind of favor where you’ll owe me big time?”

     

    “It’s the kind of favor that will earn you a bonus.”

     

    “I’m okay with those kinds of favors.”

     

    “Can you lock up? I’m going to make it an early day.”

     

    “You’re going to leave?” Alice was incredulous.

     

    “Why not?”

     

    “Because you never leave this place. Not early, anyway.”

     

    “I’m starting a new trend.” Bette hoped she didn’t sound too defensive. “So, can you stay.”

     

    “Maybe.”

     

    “Alice.” This time, the name was more of a warning.

     

    “I just wanted to know what’s dragging you away.”

     

    As Alice gave her terms, Bette tried to appear as if her leaving was no big deal.

     

    “Or should I ask,” Alice continued, “who’s dragging you away?”

     

    And Bette was failing miserably. The very thought of Tina brought the hint of a smile to her face, and a brightness to her eyes.

     

    “Go on.” Alice let her friend off the hook.

     

    “Thanks, Alice. And I do owe you one.”

     

    “No problem.”

     

    Bette went back to the office and grabbed her things. “Give me a call if you have questions or need my help,” she said quickly as she made one more stop by the desk before leaving.

     

    “I do have one request.”

     

    “Sure.” Bette was stopped, but clearly eager to get out the door.

     

    “Will you tell Tina ‘hi’ from me?”

     

    Attempting to look annoyed, but still not quite managing, Bette gave a quick, “Good-bye, Alice,” as she rushed towards the door.

    19. Well this is definitely an interesting curve – excellent title by the way. No more Eric, Bette on the way, and an upset Tina. This has all the earmarks of an interesting afternoon. You certainly MUST give us more!

    20. Jesus, who’s almost (almost?) as needy as Alice? Pseud, that’s who! (more!) Good for poor, dumped Alice getting beyond herself to act like an adult and a friend. And Bette is positively gushing like a schoolgirl, hanging on the line until Tina hangs up. Pseud, do you think you could give us an NC-17 once B&T get past the courting stage and get on to the making of sparks? Congrats on the new title-just as long as you’re not schilling for that chain of girls only gyms.
