Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty Four, Part Two (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“These are the names you have to mention in your toast.” Joyce cautiously replied, handing a small piece of paper to the hot-tempered heiress.

“Oh.” Bette sobered up automatically. “Is it time?”

    “Yes, ma’am.”

“Fine.” The heiress exhaled loudly. “Be back in a few.” She told her two non-kissing friends as she stood up from her chair. “I’m giving my toast, pry those two off each other, will ya?” She rolled her eyes at Shane and Sam, inclining her head at Alice and Dana. She cracked a smile eventually, letting her own issues and enviousness slide. With a purposeful stride, she marched on over to the make-shift platform at the front of the banquet hall. Grabbing a flute of champagne along the way, she smiled politely at everyone she passed by before accepting a microphone from one of the technicians.

“Uh.. Miss Bette?” A nervous-looking James sided up to her at the last minute, interrupting her journey up the platform.

“Not now James.” The heiress brushed the guy away, ignoring the man who was sweating bullets and looking to be at the verge of a panic attack. After taking a few seconds to study the small paper from Joyce and memorizing the names in it, she walked over to the middle of the stage and addressed the crowd with her usual air of confidence. “Excuse me everyone..” She called for everyone’s attention, donning the most charming smile in her arsenal. At the sight of the heiress, the hall hushed and quieted down almost immediately.

Bette smiled and gave a polite nod in appreciation.

“First of all, I would just like to thank each and everyone of you for being here tonight..” She began, placing a hand on her chest for added effect. Keeping her eyes on the crowd, she ignored the sounds of surprised yelps from a few people near the front of the platform as an antsy James trampled over their feet to cut his way to part of the stage that was directly opposite Bette. “Today marks an important moment in the history of the Porter Group of Companies and Genesis Prime Holdings.” The heiress continued. “And I..” She started, but trailed off almost instantaneously, momentarily losing her train of thought. Before her, an annoying James was flashing her a message scrawled haphazardly on a table napkin. Of all the fucking times! Bette seethed inwardly. She grinned at the expectant faces of the guests and cleared her throat. “And I..” She began once more. James lifted the napkin from his chest, up to his face.

    Bette growled.

She was about to give him the evil eye, but then, her eyes caught the topmost line on his note.

    Miss Tina is in Aspen.

Her mouth went dry. She felt her heart hammering inside her chest as unbridled happiness shot through her veins at an unparalleled speed. Tina was here!

“And I..” She managed to croak out again, speaking through the lump of glee in her throat. At the sidelines, her father was looking at her in utmost confusion. What was wrong with her? He wondered, and truthfully, so did everyone else in the room. She looked like the cat who swallowed the canary.

    Miss Tina is in Aspen.

Bette read this again with a giddy smile.

    But then..

It disappeared the moment she read the second line.

But right now, she’s missing in the mountains.

    “And I..”

    Missing.

Bette read that word, and the rest of her short speech left her mind completely.

People thought it was a bad case of stage fright.

    But James knew better.

The moment her arms slackened to her sides, he rushed up the platform and held her steady. Champagne spilled out of the glass, the sound of the mic falling thundered across the hall. Bette Porter, once the picture of arrogance and confidence, was as white as the cold Aspen snow. She felt a cold shiver ripple through her body. And nothing, not even the soothing words from the loyal man was able to warm her.

    Tina was missing.

And she felt the floor disappear beneath her.

    tbc..
