Just The Girl – Chapter Eighteen (a HYD-inspired fic)

"Will you really transfer her dad to Africa?" Tina slowly asked. She wasn’t able to fully grasp what Bette’s action implied until it was pointed out to her. She guessed that she was too preoccupied with the wonderful feeling of putting the obnoxious woman in her proper place that she forgot to see what Bette’s payback entailed for Jodie’s entire family.

"I’m starting to re-consider it.." Bette looked up to meet Tina’s gaze. "He’s a good, hardworking guy. But I did hear from my father that he was thinking of moving him to another branch." She bit her bottom lip. "You’re not disappointed in me are you?" She asked a little fearfully.

"No." Tina answered sincerely. Truth be told, she did feel a little special to finally see the lengths that Bette was willing to go just for her – no matter how drastic her actions were sometimes. "Just out of curiosity.. where are you going to transfer her dad?" She asked after a few beats.

"I dunno, maybe somewhere in the country that is as far away from us as possible." Bette finally smiled. "Any suggestions?"

"Maine is pretty far from California.." Tina raised her eyebrows suggestively.

"Then Maine it is." Bette smiled, glad that the issue didn’t drag on for so much longer.

"Water?" Tina offered, holding up the glass in her other hand.

"No thank you." Bette shook her head to the side. She gently took the glass from the blonde and placed it on a passing waiter’s tray. She pulled on Tina’s hand that she was still holding and guided her towards the semi-crowded dance floor.

"Again?" Tina raised an eyebrow. "What about your feet?" She asked, seeing as how Bette continued to limp a little.

"I’ll survive." Bette shrugged when they finally reached the middle of the floor. "I just want another dance with you before the night ends.." She smiled, placing her hands on Tina’s back and gingerly pressing their bodies together.

"Are you sure you won’t regret this?" Tina laughed when the band started to play a waltz.

    "I’m sure." Bette smiled confidently.

"If you say so.." Tina grinned as they began to sway around. "Hey Porter?"

    "Yes Kennard?"

    "This one’s for you.."

    "Owww!"

    "Heh! Sorry.. couldn’t resist.."

    "Kennard.."

    "Yep?"

"Because of that, my hands are gonna latch down on your ass for the remainder of this dance."

    "You wouldn’t da.. Aaaaaaaaaa!!!"
