CHAPTER THIRTY: The Ride Of Your Life
“I’m sorry..”
“No you’re not.”
“Yes. Yes, I really am.”
“You didn’t look so sorry when you were getting humped and kissed by those women.”
“Umm.. not in the outside. But in the inside, I was definitely feeling sorry..”
“…”
“C’mon.. I had to keep up a happy front for the audience. It was SO hard..”
“Yeah right Porter.”
“It really was! It was torture. I was dying a slow, painful death over there..”
“Yeah, we all saw how much you were in pain through the face-splitting grin on your face.”
“My fake smile wasn’t that big.”
“…”
“Okaaay.. maybe it was teeny bit excessive. But it paled in comparison to the way I smile when I’m with you, right?”
“I don’t know. I never pay any attention to your face.”
“Really?”
“Yep.”
“How come I always catch you staring at me?”
“I do not!”
“Do too!”
“You’re imagining things Porter!”
“Kennard.”
“What?!”
“Look at my face.”
“Huh?”
“See this?”
“What about it?”
“See how my smile reaches up to my eyes?”
“Yeah, so what?”
“I seem to be doing that a lot these past few weeks. I don’t think I have smiled and laughed this much in my entire life..”
“Good for you then.”
“That’s why I’m blaming you..”
“For what?”
“If I develop crow’s feet near my eyes when I get older, it’s because of all the smiling you make me do..”
“Really now?”
“Yep.”
“Hey Porter?”
“Yes?”
“When we get older and I form deep frown lines on my forehead, it’s because of all the stress you put me through..”
“Touché. Hey..”
“What?”
“Wait a minute..”
“Hmm?”
“You see us together when you get older?”
“I didn’t say that! I said–”
Kiss.
“You don’t have to be shy. I see us together too.”

The grounds surrounding the three pergolas were nearly devoid of people, even the security people roaming around discreetly disappeared one by one into the main pergola. The concert was going on in full force, enthralling the guests and the crew milling about. The only ones braving the cold night air and socializing outside in the gardens were the matronly women sourgraping at the sidelines because their husbands were keeping warm and drooling over the young and attractive performers. So captivated and mesmerized were the people inside that they failed to notice that the star of the night was missing in action along with her beautiful and relatively unknown blonde date.
