    Who’s your daddy?


      

    Somewhere inside a banquet hall in Los Angeles, amidst the crying faces of guests watching a touching video of refugees from Darfur, a young brunette stood out like a sore thumb. The girl’s beautiful brown eyes twinkled in bliss as her face displayed a toothy grin that reached her ears. “Mmff.” Bette Porter bit back a giddy giggle as she read and re-read the short message once again. “Hey James..” She silently nudged the man sitting beside her on the table.

     

    “Y-yes Miss Bette?” James sniffled as he discreetly wiped the sides of his eyes with the back of his hand.

     

    “How long will the program last?” Bette whispered as she fidgeted on her seat. She felt bad for wanting to leave this event early, but she couldn’t help the immense feeling of longing that was eating her up inside. She might be in this fundraiser physically.. but mentally, emotionally and spiritually.. she was with a blonde somewhere else.

     

    James read the booklet in front of him and whispered back. “After the film showing, the monetary pledges will start then its just cocktails and dancing from there.”

     

    “Okay.” Bette nodded her head. “Pledge five million from the M. Porter Foundation so we could go..” She smiled as the end credits started to roll and the crowd stood up and applauded. Baby, here I come! She rubbed her hands excitedly.

    “Good evening Miss McCutcheon.” Phyllis Kroll greeted as she made her way inside her living room. “To what do I owe this unexpected visit?” She smiled as she shook hands with the lanky brunette who was standing beside the fireplace and studying the pictures of her daughter on the mantle.

     

    “I’m just here to talk business.” Shane smiled as Phyllis motioned for her to sit down on the couch opposite her.

     

    “Business?” Phyllis lifted an eyebrow. Great, she smiled broadly, she must be here to give her family’s quarterly contribution to the school.

     

    “Yeah.” Shane nodded her head as she made herself comfortable on the couch. She silently laughed to herself as she observed the dollar signs flashing from the eyes of their notoriously greedy headmistress.

     

    “Just what kind of business?” Phyllis grinned, pouring on the charm. This is good, she thought excitedly as her palms started itching.
