Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 31 (Conclusion and Epilogue)

“I’m not wedded to Los Angeles, Peggy.  But…”

“I know.  You ran off to London to be with me a lifetime ago and later, you met a Canadian and moved countries to be with her, and you’re done with following women.”

“I just don’t believe it’s in my best interest.  How does it serve me to chase behind women all the time?  I’m too old for that.”

“We’re two old fools, then.  I traipsed across the United States and then into British Columbia for just a word with you.  Darling, you have no strong ties to Los Angeles and I have very strong ties to New York.  I’m not asking you to follow me, but join me.”

“I think this is probably something we should talk about privately.”

Dylan and Helena glanced at each other.

“You can speak freely in front of Helena.”

“Later,” Marilyn said, putting an end to that part of the conversation.

“Yes, you’re right.  Let’s just take in this view.  Marilyn, the sea is a delight, isn’t it?”  Peggy took the hint and changed the subject, but before Marilyn could respond to her question about the sea, Peggy said to Helena, “And what are your plans?”

“Mother, I’m not that interested in coming back full-time to LA.  Dylan and I are running Focus Features and more importantly, Wilson and Jun-Ying are in New York. Your grandchildren miss you, by the way.  Anyway, I spent too much time away from them myself.  We’re staying put.  Winnie and I have finally forged a decent joint custody agreement.  I don’t want to jeopardize any of that.”

“Yes.  When is product going to start coming out of your little production company?”

Helena frowned.  She hated the way Helena could minimize her work, but Dylan sat up, smiled, and leaned in to speak.  “We’re up and moving.  We have a film in the can and one in post-production.”

“And…” Helena jumped in, “Sometime today I’d like to have a sit down with Tina Kennard about coming to work for us.”

“I need Tina here.  Even though she’s only a consultant, she’s working exclusively with Shaolin.  And moreover, what makes you think she’d want to move to New York?”

“Mother, you’re wasting Tina’s talents.  You’ve got her producing graphic novel shoot ‘em-ups–Dylan taught me that phrase–and Ninja movies.  Tina brings an artistic sensibility to the table.  I told you–she worked for Merchant/Ivory.  She should be doing art films.”

    1. Portia, congrats on finishing this epic! I will always be a fan, and I was very happy to be one of the people to encourage you, and who knows–maybe you’ll have another fanfic in you that will need to come out! You’ve inspired so many of the writers here, so thank you, and I hope we’ll see you around!xoxo

    2. wow what can i say, this story has been the best time and time again and i can say that i’ve enjoyed every bit of it, though I’m extremely sad that this is it for laid up. My favourite couple have obviously been dana and alice, and you’ve written them and their story just perfectly, how it should have been, for me anyway. For every chapter, page and word….THANK YOU PORTIA!!!!!!!!!!! xox

    4. Oh PortiaOnly I can only say a heart felt Thank you for brining us this impressive and comprehensive epic. I have ready this story from the start. It has always amazed me how you wound the pieces of the series into this complete work. I love where you have taken all of them and how it was so true to the characters we have know. Thanks for all you hard work.

    5. Portia, thank you so much for this epic love story. I’m happy that all of the characters are happy and content. The loop holes that the show had created, you have thoroughly patched. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    6. Thanks so much for sharing this incredible journey with us. This is one of the best and engaging stories I have ever read. You are an remarkable talent!!

    7. Thank you for this story. What an undertaking! You got all the main characters involved and kept me interested. And more importantly, you finished it. I love that!

    9. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    11. Hello PortiaOnly, This story has been an absolute joy to read. It has taken much time and dedication from you to create a momentous melodrama. So many of the images and scenes including dialogue where taken from the show and seemlessly interweaved in to your take on events.I stand up and applaud you and your wonderful talent.Thank you ever so much for sharing it with me.Your Loyal Fan.PS – I hope that you continue to write about these characters and post your work here.

    12. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. I had to stop several times for work or sleep but it was well worth the time. 14. PortiaOnly- I hope you receive this message so many years after writing this incredible story but I had to tell you, this is by far one of the most amazing L Word stories I’ve ever read. You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
