    Bette, Tina, Dana, Alice, Shane, Carmen, Helena, Dylan, Kit, Angus, Peggy, and Marilyn discover what John Lennon said in the song, “Beautiful Boy” is absolutely true: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”

    Carmen waved away some of the smoke.  “Jeez, have you heard of second hand smoke?”

    “I don’t understand why you’re all weirded out about cigarettes, but you’re the first one to roll and toke on a joint.”

    “Weed is different.”  Carmen paused, then said, “Just like you and Gabe are different.  You are not your old man, Shane.  He was like in his forties when him and Carla hooked up and had Shay. He was middle-aged.  He’s the Dad.  You’re not a stranger now, but you practically were.  Most people wouldn’ta done what you did. 

    Shane shook her head.  She really couldn’t understand the way her mind worked.  Carmen was doing her deejay thing, a little production assistant work, and helping Shane with Shay.  “You’re fine with it.  He’s not even your blood relative, but you’re fine playing Shay’s other mother.  I’m not lyin’ when I say I’d like to fuckin’ walk away, too.”  Shane dropped her cigarette and smashed it with the ball of her Converse sneaker.  She pulled out her hard pack box of Marlboros, opened it up and extracted a rolled joint.  She slipped it between her lips and lit it.  They kept walking.

    “Maybe you should,” Carmen said.

    “Should, what?  Walk away?  What’s the kid supposed to do with that?” Shane took a toke from the joint and passed it to Carmen who enjoyed it just as much.

    As she held the smoke in, Carmen tried to speak.  What came out was a ragged, breathy squeak when she explained, “Go away for a while.  Do your thing.  Look, I’ll watch Shay.  Take a week; drive your ride up the coast or down to San Diego or into TJ.  I think you’re right.  You need a break from this.”

    “What does that make me?  Someone who can’t follow through?  Who runs from shit?  Who doesn’t give a fuck?”  She took the joint from Carmen and inhaled.

    “When you’re tryin’ to keep it together, you do whatever it takes, Shane.  It’s better than you sitting in the living room, spacin’ out, answering all of us with yes and no answers.  Nobody needs that.  Just go pull it together and then come back.”

    “You’d be cool with that?”  Shane held the joint in her hand.

It has always amazed me how you wound the pieces of the series into this complete work. I love where you have taken all of them and how it was so true to the characters we have know. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    13. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    18. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. I had to stop several times for work or sleep but it was well worth the time. I prolonged finishing the last chapter didn’t want t see it end, but like the L word, like tibette chemistry, all good things but come to end….Bravo!! my friend I hope to see a book with your name on it forreal..til next story………

You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
