Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 31 (Conclusion and Epilogue)

“Her work is so angry.  Was she an angry lover?”

Bette smiled, her lips sealed tight.  She then pursed her lips, before saying, “Honestly, it was a long time ago.  I was barely thirty.

Peggy raised an eyebrow.  “My dear, I was away from this sweet woman for over thirty years and I remember every last detail of my life with her.  Mare, darling, what about you?”

    “I never forgot a moment—good and bad.”

    “So…Megan Friedman?”

“I-I guess I just don’t have the memory of you two, but I’d love to show you her work?”

“I’m looking for ‘Hearts and Daggers’ and ‘The Divided.’”

“You must know ‘The Divided’ is in my collection, Peggy.”  Bette smiled that ‘I’m on to you,’ smile that she gave when someone was trying to pull a fast one.

“And what kind of deal can we make for it?”

    “It’s not for sale.”

“And the Kiki Smith works I saw in your hallway?”

“Definitely not for sale.”  Bette said, “Peggy, it’s Thanksgiving.  Come by the gallery and we can do business.”

“Speaking of the Bette Porter Gallery…”

Bette heard Kit’s voice above the other conversations going on and she turned to see her half-brother, Clayton Moskowitz walking down the steps.  His walk wasn’t that confident stride Bette was used to seeing.  His shoulders were slumped and his expression could best be described as distant.  She watched him as he carried himself over to Tina and kissed her cheek, and then rubbed her belly.

“Excuse me,” Bette said as she left Peggy and Marilyn.

Stephanie said hello to Mo, then headed into the house to find Mikey and Henry.  Bette and Kit were on either side of Tina when Mo began to explain why he was late.

“So, I drove her to LAX.  It was pointless.  Luisa wanted nothing to do with me.  Like a fool, I attempted to hug her goodbye.  Em-bar-rassing,” he sang. “She gave me the finger, told me to go to hell, promised to put everything that I had at her place in the dumpster, and then told me to ‘cram it up my ass.’  All said in front of these Japanese tourists who thought it would be a nice piece of Americana to have photographic and video documentation of the argument to show when they returned home.  Nice.  Very nice.”

    1. Portia, congrats on finishing this epic! I will always be a fan, and I was very happy to be one of the people to encourage you, and who knows–maybe you’ll have another fanfic in you that will need to come out! You’ve inspired so many of the writers here, so thank you, and I hope we’ll see you around!xoxo

    2. wow what can i say, this story has been the best time and time again and i can say that i’ve enjoyed every bit of it, though I’m extremely sad that this is it for laid up. My favourite couple have obviously been dana and alice, and you’ve written them and their story just perfectly, how it should have been, for me anyway. For every chapter, page and word….THANK YOU PORTIA!!!!!!!!!!! xox

    4. Oh PortiaOnly I can only say a heart felt Thank you for brining us this impressive and comprehensive epic. I have ready this story from the start. It has always amazed me how you wound the pieces of the series into this complete work. I love where you have taken all of them and how it was so true to the characters we have know. Thanks for all you hard work.

    5. Portia, thank you so much for this epic love story. I’m happy that all of the characters are happy and content. The loop holes that the show had created, you have thoroughly patched. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    6. Thanks so much for sharing this incredible journey with us. This is one of the best and engaging stories I have ever read. You are an remarkable talent!!

    7. Thank you for this story. What an undertaking! You got all the main characters involved and kept me interested. And more importantly, you finished it. I love that!

    9. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    11. Hello PortiaOnly, This story has been an absolute joy to read. It has taken much time and dedication from you to create a momentous melodrama. So many of the images and scenes including dialogue where taken from the show and seemlessly interweaved in to your take on events.I stand up and applaud you and your wonderful talent.Thank you ever so much for sharing it with me.Your Loyal Fan.PS – I hope that you continue to write about these characters and post your work here.

    12. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. I had to stop several times for work or sleep but it was well worth the time. 14. PortiaOnly- I hope you receive this message so many years after writing this incredible story but I had to tell you, this is by far one of the most amazing L Word stories I’ve ever read. You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
