Life Through a Viewfinder

Having an apartment in Manhattan is such a blessing at times. Not only am I able to get a lot of work in New York, but it is also one of my favorite cities to explore. Today I will go to a very familiar place:
N40° 45.772259’
W73° 58.683146’
Those are the longitude and latitude coordinates for one of the best places to people watch and take pictures: the Love Sculpture. I decided to sit a little farther away today than I normally do and just pan through the crowds with my 70-300mm telephoto lens.
After about an hour, an older couple, looking to be in their 80’s, approaches the sculpture. They’re holding hands and I can’t help but watch them and wonder about their story. Their deep love for each other is so evident, tangible even. I wonder when and where they met? How did he propose? Do they have children, grandchildren, even possibly great-grandchildren? Do they live in the city, or simply visitors passing through? I wonder about the ups and downs of their life together and what they would say the secret to a loving and happy relationship is? I imagine a bottomless well of wisdom and insight to surviving life together.
They are approaching the sculpture now and stop to examine it from a few feet away. Then, as I focus in, hoping to capture this moment, I can see him turning to look at her. She’s still looking at the sculpture and doesn’t seem to notice him staring at her. He begins to smile the kind of smile that says “How did I get so damn lucky?.” As the shutter clicks, I feel a slight bit of guilt for intruding on their moment. I decide to delete the photo and let them keep this memory for themselves. They’ve given me enough already just letting me witness their love for each other. I know it truly does exist and it gives me hope that somewhere out in this vast universe is the woman I am meant to grow old with.
I hit the play button to view the image one last time before deleting it and allow my eyes a moment to adjust to life outside of the viewfinder. As the image comes into focus, I see her. She is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen, and everything else in the picture seems to fade into the background. After I awaken from my stupor, I jump up and start scanning the crowd in hopes of finding this magnificent beauty. I just have to meet her! Was she real or a figment of my imagination? Was she here alone or with a lover? Who is this angel? All these questions were flooding my mind at an alarming rate.
